Description Adam Porter 2011-01-03 00:16:32 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.4)
OS: Linux

In KDE 3.5 I can add a network KSysGuard applet to Kicker and I can set the colors to whatever I want. In KDE 4.5 I am not allowed to choose the colors. There's not even a label for each color--I have to figure it out for myself by looking at another monitor to see how much up/down bandwidth is in use.

There are also no options for static/dynamic scaling, width, interval, etc.

All of this is a regression from KDE 3.5--it's the opposite of progress. It's like GNOMEifying KDE. :(

Reproducible: Always

I discovered that the Complex Plotter widget can be configured to
appear almost the same as the KDE 3.5 KSysGuard Kicker applet. It'd
be great if it was included with Plasma, because it nearly replicates
the KDE 3.5 functionality, although the configuration UI isn't quite
as simple.

It can be configured by editing ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc
Search for the name of the network interface you set to be displayed to find the block containing options for this plasmoid. It's not like you have to edit its source code :)

OK, I was wrong. You do have to edit its source code.

Somehow there are inColor and outColor keys in the above mentioned config file for this applet on my machine, but they seem to be remnants from an older version of this applet. They are not used anymore. The network monitor applet doesn't set colors for its diagram widget, the colors come from the selected color scheme (system settings/desktop design/details/color scheme). The problem is, that all built-in color schemes provide two shades of gray, and the fill is almost transparent :(

BTW this is not GNOMEifying, because you can change the colors of the system monitor applet in GNOME 2.x :)
