Version:           2.0.89 (using KDE 4.5.90) 
OS:                Linux

I get following message when starting Kmail:
KMail encountered a fatal error and will terminate now.
The error was: Protocol version 27 found, expected at least 28
Same message (just in German with Kaddressbook).
Might be a packaging error, but I am not sure. Will report upstream, if necessary.

Reproducible: Always

means your akonadi server version is too old. Update your local akonadi server or report this issue to your distribution if you're using packages.
