Description John Hofstetter 2010-12-20 02:32:00 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.1)
OS: Linux

When creating a new user with system settings>user manager root enforces a password change. The password change fields won't accept keyboard input, making all users unusable. I'm using Kubuntu 10.10.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Create a new user account with login manager, then login to the newly created for the first time.

Actual Results:
Log into a new account created in system settings>user manager for the first time. A message appears stating password change required root enforced. The two fields to enter new password won't accept input from keyboard.

Expected Results:
Input new password into the two fields in the password change window

Was unable to edit details of the report so comment 1 will have to suffice as a minor edit--JH

I have seen this behaviour in 4.5.4 on Kubuntu 10.10 using the normal GUI login.

I have the very same issue as well (Kubuntu 10.10 + Kubuntu PPA with KDE 4.5.4). I have to switch login in a text console to change the password first.

(text input worked once though, I don't know why, out of 10 attempts)

This is actually in the list of "known Maverick bugs" :

"New user can't log in After a new user is created in Kubuntu systemsettings, they will be prompted to change their password when they log in for the first time. There is an issue in 10.10 that prevents the new password from being entered. In order to avoid this problem, the X server needs to be restarted before the new user logs in. After logout, click on the red logout button on the KDM screen and then click on "Restart X Server". Once the KDM login screen returns, the new user should be able to log in normally. (Bug: 641712) "

see the launchpad bug report : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/641712

Looks like a downstream bug.

closing it then. please reopen if contrary evidence appears.

Seems more like a KDE Bug. The problem appears on Ubuntu 11.10 with KDE 4.7.2 (4.7.2) and openSUSE 12.1 with 4.7.2 (4.7.2) "release 5", both with 64-bit kernels.

The following procedure was reproducible on both platforms mentioned above, both tested with normal PAM password/shadow accounts and with PAM_LDAP. Tested with local and LDAP accounts.

As soon as the shadow last change entry (in LDAP shadowLastChange) has a 0 (zero) as an entry, the user receives the message "You are required to change the password immediately (root enforced).".

After clicking OK, the new Window "Changing authentication token" appears. The cursor is blinking correctly on the entry "New password:", but no keyboar input is possible. The only thing that works in this window is the cancel button.

Pasting something into the window is not possible with Ctrl+C. Interestingly pasting something with with the middle mouse button works. At this moment, you get an entry on the "New password:", but the keyboard still does not work. But at least now you can click OK and the screen tells you, that the password does not match an you can re enter the password. We now finally have keyboard focus and can change the password.
