Description m.wege 2010-12-14 08:40:01 UTC
Version: 2.0.89
OS: Linux

When I configure Kmail2 only to show unread mails, the mail I read is instantly marked as unread (which might be ok) and then disappears from the list of mails (which is bad and different from the behaviour in Kmail1). The disadvantage compared to the behaviour in Kmail1 is that I can not do anything with that mail anymore using the mouse. I can not decide mark it as unread, move it to another space and so on. Keyboard short cuts seem to work, but it would be really great if the old behaviour would work again, since I hardly use them.
In Kmail the unread mail stayed visuable for a while, even when moving on to the next mail.

Reproducible: Always

OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.37-7-generic-pae
Compiler: cc

Still a problem in KDE PIM 4.6 beta3
Comment 2 meyerm 2011-06-19 12:12:00 UTC
Also valid for KMail 2.1.0.

BTW: Behaviour in Akregator (or KMail 1) is to leave that mail visible even though it is now marked as read and the filter says "only unread". That's good ;-) Perhaps an alternative would be to remove the mail from the listview as soon as the user moves on to the next mail (by mouse or keyboard).

Any chance this will get fixed? Appart from stability and speed, this is one of my main issues with Kmail2.

I will look at messagelist
Comment 10 Florian Fainelli 2012-05-31 07:57:49 UTC
Ping! What's the supposed workflow when reading emails with this bug? As soon as I read a mail, it disappears, along with the corresponding thread, so I have to manually search back for the thread I was reading, not convenient.

I nominate this one for extra mile.

This bug is still present as of 4:4.9.2-0ubuntu2, please fix this.
Comment 15 m.wege 2012-10-23 14:48:22 UTC
Oh yes, I believe this is the last severe bug (after address autocomplete was fixed) which prevents me from using Kmail again.

Comment 20 Florian Fainelli 2013-05-26 16:23:22 UTC
Laurent or someone else, please fix this, this is really annoying.
Comment 21 m.wege 2013-05-26 16:25:51 UTC
I agree. It would be really nice, if this would be fixed :-)
Comment 22 Florian Fainelli 2013-07-02 18:18:07 UTC
Not only would it be nice; but it would make Kmail usable again. What is the suggested way to use Kmail these days without this? I really liked the old "New" filter which would not make the emails disappear but this was closed with no explanation what so ever: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=293620
Comment 23 Jonathan M Davis 2013-07-02 18:27:39 UTC
> What is the suggested way to use Kmail these days without this?

What I'm forced to do is filter on unread to see what the e-mails are, then get rid of that filter and then filter on the subject of the e-mail so that only that thread appears (or only threads with similar subjects depending on how much of the subject I specify and how unique it is). At that point, when I click on the unread e-mails, they don't disappear, since the filter is on the subject rather than their status.

But it's definitely not as pleasant as being able to doing this by simpling filtering on unread. It's the only way that I'd found to reasonably get around this bug though.
Comment 24 Florian Fainelli 2013-07-02 18:51:31 UTC
Previous kmail versions achieved the exact same in one click with "New", but for some unknown reason this will not be added again, I am really curious as to why. Thanks for sharing your "workflow" with Kmail.
Comment 25 gustavo 2013-07-02 22:14:31 UTC
@Jonathan,

That works but makes it totally unusable. No other email / webmail client makes the emails disappear when browsing through them in "unread filter" mode.

I'm not arguing for a moment that this bug does not need to be fixed. In fact, I find it _really_ annoying. I was explaining how I get around the bug.
Comment 27 m.wege 2013-07-04 16:13:45 UTC
For me this bug is the main reason for not using Kmail anymore. Although I really would like to use it again.

Waou, it's just this one which makes that you don't use kmail.
I will put it on my todo before crashs, an other big bugs.
Ok will do :) I change my priorities :)

Well, compared to the fact that I lost 4 years of communication due to the bugs in disconnected IMAP this bug is a piece of cake....
Nevertheless I prefer KMail over Thunderbird and similar...but akonadi & co need some tuning

So, I am totally tired of waiting for that simple thing to come back. My best bet now is that the kdepim developpers do not actually use their own software, or maybe they can read emails in the blink of an eye, pick your option.
Comment 33 Christoph Feck 2014-06-24 12:55:42 UTC
My guess is that it's just not easy to change. If the filtered view is designed to reflect the status of the message, it will disappear when it is read. I don't know the internals, but I think a new status ("read but not really read") would need to be introduced.
Comment 34 m.wege 2014-06-24 13:25:24 UTC
May be it could help to see how it was done in Kmail1?

Could this be finally fixed ?
That quick filter "Unread" function is basically useless with this bug.

yes, and it was perfectly ported to 5.3.0 - as the 4.x tree is not maintained any longer, should we maybe update the version?
Comment 40 Axel Braun 2017-03-30 13:13:47 UTC
Still a problem in KMail 5.4.3
Comment 41 Delian Krustev 2017-04-17 16:31:44 UTC
I also find this bug annoying.

I've used KMail from Debian Wheezy - vKMail 4.4.11 ( https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/kmail ). Interestingly, others reported that the feature was removed in much previous version. It worked for me in 4.4.1 though.

Now I'm with Debian Stretch with KMail 5.2.3 .

A workaround I currently use is to disable the immediate marking of opened messages as read.

IMHO filters to the message list should only be applied "onChange" of the filter button, as it previously was.

And guys, thanks for the wonderful software!
I've been using it for a decade .. or more ;)
