Description Jakub Schmidtke 2010-12-10 01:23:53 UTC
Version: 2.0.89 (using KDE 4.5.85)
OS: Linux

By default, when I hit 'reply' or 'forward' the composer's window is empty.
The templates contain only '%BLANK'. When I modify it, I get better
results, but those are certainly not healthy defaults!

Reproducible: Always

OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.36-ARCH
Compiler: gcc

Duplicate of bug 184307?
Comment 2 Laurent Montel 2010-12-10 10:18:13 UTC
Works fine here.
What do you have in configure->composer->Standard Template ?

Regards
Comment 3 Jakub Schmidtke 2010-12-10 14:39:28 UTC
I described what I had in the template window. The problem is not with the composer not using the templates. The problem is with default values of those templates.

I started with an empty KDE configuration, and all those templates were set to "%BLANK", resulting in behaviour described. Once it is set to "%QUOTE" it works fine. Do you expect every KDE user to set those things manually?
Comment 4 Jakub Schmidtke 2010-12-10 14:43:33 UTC
I looked at the bug 184307 and found something about 'use defaults'. In my case this helped too, pressing 'default' button restored those templates to a usable state. But the bug is still there - why the default was not set there since the beginning? I started with an empty configuration, defaults should be set by... well... "default" when there is nothing set, right? ;)
Comment 5 Jakub Schmidtke 2010-12-10 14:44:49 UTC
And actually the same applies to "Charsets" tab in the configuration, by default it was empty, pressing "defaults" it populated it with valeus that make sense. Possibly in other places too. So I guess this bug is "the default configuration is not set by default". Should I open a new bug?

Hej Jakub,

happend this with a fresh install or after a migration from KDE-PIM <= 4.4?

Ciao,
Tobias

Tobias: I didn't reinstall the whole OS, I just cleaned up the KDE configuration.
I removed: ~/.kde4 (which is KDE's dir used by Arch), and ~/.kderc, and also most of ~/.local and ~/.config (Akonadi kept some stuff there), and anything KDE-related in /tmp and /var/tmp. So the system was not "a fresh install", but there was no KDE configuration (unless I missed anything)

I just found this bug after encountering this problem as well. I installed Kubuntu 10.10 today and immediately upgraded to KDE PIM beta 3 through Kubuntu's repositories. So I only started using KMail/Kontact for the first time after having upgraded to 4.6 beta 3.

At first nothing seemed to be wrong and KMail would quote messages fine when I would hit the reply button, but then I encountered the charset bug which is described in bug #251658, see my comments there too. I used the workaround (removing the empty 'pref-charsets' entry in $HOME/.kde/share/config/kmail2rc in the [Composer] section) to fix that bug, but after doing that I noticed that all standard templates were suddenly blanked as well. Possibly there is a connection between these somehow?

Because by default the behaviour was fine and the templates were suddenly blanked later on, my problem would indeed be more related to bug #184307 mentioned here in the comments, but that bug is for the old KMail.

I also encountered this bug after migrating to KMail 2.1 from KMail 1. Here's an additional twist: I clicked the Defaults button as advised above, and I could see the templates change. Clicked OK and tried to reply to a message. Quoting still didn't work, and going back to the Message Composer Settings I saw that the templates were blank again! Tried this a couple of times, same result. Then I edited one of the templates, and now the changes were persistent.

Seems like the Defaults button doesn't mark the settings "dirty", so they are not saved when OK is clicked.

Just close it. I don't even use kmail anymore.
