Version: SVN (using KDE 4.5.85) OS: Linux I used to right click text files in konqueror and modify/save them. But this feature does not work in KDE 4.6 Beta 1 and 2. I can still preview any text file in konqueror bu I cannot cut/copy/paste text in it. "Vi-mode" cannot make any modification also. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Right click a text file. Click Preview in "Embedded Advanced Text Editor" Try to make some modifications. Actual Results: Being unable to make any modifications. Expected Results: Being able to make any modifications. OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.35-23-generic Compiler: cc
As far as I know, "Preview" being able to edit the file only worked because of a bug that has been fixed. The preview mode has never been meant to edit a file.
I think you are wrong. Then why there is buttons such as SAVE, SAVE AS, CUT, PASTE... and they were working perfectly until 4.6 ? i can confirm this. "embedded advanced text editor" (NOT "viewer") used to work fine, for viewing as well as editing files until KDE 4.5. using KDE Distro:/Factory now (4.5.85) on openSUSE factory, and the editor doesn't allow any editing anymore; neither as normal user, nor as root (kdesu).
from a reply on the kde mailing list today it seems that this bug belongs to openSUSE rather than KDE; at least on gentoo the embedded text editor seems to function OK. anybody else here _not_ on openSUSE experience this bug?
today I upgraded to 4.6 on my KUBUNTU 10.10. Text edit feature of konqueror is still missing :( Can anybody explain me to how to downgrade to kde 4.4 ????? I just updated to 4.6 on gentoo, and have this problem. For me, the main advantage of konqueror over other similar applications is the ability to combine so many different tasks in one tabbed window; so I don't see why being able to edit a text file would be considered a bug, when it's been a useful and fairly polished feature for a long time now.
In OpenSuse release version the same thing. Please don't consider this as a necessary side effect of a fixed bug. It is rather a removed feature. It encourages me to downgrade KDE to previous versions. Is that the intention?
Konqueror the entire KDE3 days was only able to preview, not edit. This was by intention. In KDE4 editing worked only due to a bug, as mentioned in comment #1. If you want this feature, please discuss it at kde-core-devel@kde.org, since it's a major change in the KDE Desktop experience. So I close this bug for now.

Comment #1 mentioned a "bug". Where was that bug in KDE 4.5? This is a feature removal, not a bug fix. If you are removing that feature, can you suggest me another browser that can edit files on http right inside it?
