Migrating to a new machine or a new version of KDE is a massive trail of tears for anyone that uses the KDE-PIM package. Accounts have to be manually recreated, emails are a royal pain to transfer, and contacts are almost always lost, if not completely, at least all of the physical address information. The developers of Evolution solved these issues long ago. I don't like using Evolution or the Gnome interface, but, it takes about 45 minutes to migrate to a new version of Ubuntu using the Gnome/Evolution combination and about 2 days to migrate the same machine to a new KDE/KDE-PIM combination due to all of the dorking around caused by lack of backup/restore. In the last 3 years, no two releases seem to have been even remotely compatible with address and contact information. This is a highly frustrating situation which seems to get completely ignored. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: migrate from 10.04 to 10.10 KUbuntu after creating email accounts and filing hundreds of emails and contacts away. It is possible to archive kmail's folders in compressed files and later restore them, and it's also possible to export contacts to files, but I think that you want something like a Kontact backup system that backs-up everything that is in kontact right? Technically KMail by itself doesn't store contacts, since that is handled by KAddressBook. But I can see the advantages of a KMail only backup system, because that would backup accounts, signatures, templates and all that.
I guess, technically the bug should be filed with KDE-PIM, because at the PIM level it should backup email, contacts, todo lists, journal, popups, calendar, and every other piece of information stored in the KDE PIM, just like Evolution does. When a new version or a fresh install of KDE-PIM happens, there should be an option under the File menu to "Restore from backup". All new versions need to support all prior backup versions/formats...this means they will most likely have to allow for data which didn't exist in prior versions to not be there. Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report. KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2. We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
For the past 10 years people have been asking for an automated backup/restore option. It is highly unlikely developers actually provided this feature in the new release since they have ignored it for a decade thinking it is far better to have a few black hats know a few secret directories they hand copy here and there.
