I always liked to have a look at these figures and the text at the same time. My personal opinion is that the text is easier to understand if you have the figure in front of you. Now if the reader has two screens or simply keeps the pic on top of the text, the reader could easily have a glimps and read a line and check back on the figure... How cool would that be?
