Version: 4.5 (using KDE 4.5.3) OS: Linux after upgrading one system using Kubuntu 10.10 to 5.4.3 - on reboot the screen went blank, I upgrade a second system, opting to replace the login file, it booted to the login screen, after typing in the user & password I clicked to proceed to the Kubuntu desktop (now 4.5.3) and the screen went blank. Next, when I press the shutdown button (on the computer) it shutsdown normally. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: upgrade from any kde version to 5.4.3 and reboot Actual Results: after upgrading one system using Kubuntu 10.10 to 5.4.3 - on reboot the screen went blank, I upgrade a second system, opting to replace the login file, it booted to the login screen, after typing in the user & password I clicked to proceed to the Kubuntu desktop (now 4.5.3) and the screen went blank. Next, when I press the shutdown button (on the computer) it shutsdown normally. Expected Results: Kubuntu desktop should have loaded.
Did you only update KDE or other packages, too? Can you see the mouse cursor? Does pressing Alt+Shift+F12 to disable compositing help? Does switching between console and X screen (Ctrl+Alt+Fn) work?

From there I can log into the console. It was a full upgrade from 4.5.2 to 4.5.3, I have the full kde desktop installed.
what christoph wanted to know whether the upgrade you ran included kernel or Xorg updates as well. "blank" kdm sounds a lot like comment #28 in bug #247839 "no cursor" means a severe issue with the X11 start (look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log) unless you're using the CSS nvidia driver, try to disable kms by adding "nomodeset" to the kernel boot options in grub. this /might/ also fix the login on the other system. report the results, but the whole thing is hardly KDE/kwin related
This sounds like the problem - and it's been a problem, although not as severe each major upgrade, either with the ubuntu base or kde environment. the kde upgrade was a general environment upgrade of the full kde environment, the list of programs was large - but all listed under kde. It first removed the old and then installed the new. One thing to note, is that upon the completion of the upgrade for 5.2 to 5.3, the notification to restart did not show up - but neither did any error message showing problems with the upgrade. At this point, the cause is unknown -
