Version:           unspecified (using KDE 4.5.2)

If you enable keyboard-layout selector in KDE SC 4.5.2 or even 4.5.3 you get a blank icon for german. US is ok - though ...

Better to describe is to look at this screenshot:

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Go to System Settings > Input Devices > Keyboard > Layout > Show keyboard-layout selector in taskbar

Actual Results:  
You get a blank icon for german layout in taskbar.

Expected Results:  
You should get DE or GE instead of blank

Tested on chakra gnu/linux kde sc 4.5.2 and 4.5.3

Could you please attach your kxkbrc file?

Also I would recommend to upgrade to KDE 4.6 - I think there were some fixes in how the tray icons are handled.

Well, I'm sorry that I didn't close this bug already. It was fixed in version 4.5.5
