Description Madison Kelly 2010-10-27 18:18:39 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.1)
OS: Linux

I'm running Kate 3.5.1 on KDE development platform 4.5.1 on Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 using Gnome 2.32.0. With default themes all around, kate's directory list has two problems.

1. The currently active file is highlighted light gray with white text.
2. The mouse-over popup of a file's URI is highlighted black with dark gray text.

An example can be seen here: http://alteeve.com/pics/kate_problem.png

I tried to search for a place where these colours could be changed but didn't find it, if it exists.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Fresh install and update of Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64.
2. Install kate.
3. Add some files.
4. mouse-over a file and look at the highlighting of the one being edited.

Actual Results:
Difficult to read highlighting.

Expected Results:
Easy to read highlighting.

Madison, can you please follow http://kate-editor.org/get-it/ and compile Kate from sources? (completely safe, your system installation will remain untouched).

There, the Documents tab was completely rewritten, so the problem is probably solved for KDE 4.6. Can you confirm?
Comment 2 Madison Kelly 2010-10-27 23:54:02 UTC
Following those instructions, the problem remains. It also still shows the same version numbers for both kate and kde. As an aside, is there a way to revert back to the traditional file list layout?

I don't know for the tool tip problem, but for the item views, please refer to bug 253022 for an explanation and a problem solution.

Are you absolutely sure you're running the new kate? The new Tree View uses the default KDE colors. So if something is displaying wrong, its most likely due to your global color scheme.

Right click context menu on the tree, select "List Mode", or select list mode from the "File Tree" settings page in the settings dialog.

I am, unless there is a flaw in that document. I made sure that I was starting the compiled version by going into the ~/kde/usr/bin directory and running ./kate.

Can you attach or link to a screen shot of this happening with the tree view (in either list or tree mode).

This is wrong. Start it with the run.sh script, as described in http://kate-editor.org/get-it/

But I agree with Thomas: KDE has lots of colors, is it really no color in the color scheme?

ok, back to the color scheme again: What if you choose different color schemes?
What are the values in "systemsettings" > Colors > Colors Tab, then in the combo box "Color set" choose Tooltip. What's the background color here in the preview on the bottom?

I don't see those options in Kate. Are those KDE settings? If so, I should re-state that I am running Kate under Gnome.
Comment 14 Madison Kelly 2010-10-28 18:53:53 UTC
Hrm, I tried changing the theme in Gnome, expecting no change as it is a KDE app. However, switching away from the default "Ambient" theme made the problem go away. I'll refile this as a Gnome/Ubuntu bug.
