Other mail clients, e.g. mutt, do that, and there are editors that can handle headers (e.g. syntax highlighting). Advantage: you can e.g. change the subject while composing the mail, you don't forget to whom you are writing, etc. Reproducible: Didn't try

In the kmail version that comes with KDE 4.9.0 (Is this kmail2?) such an option still doesn't exist. Let me add another advantage of being able to edit headers in an external editor: You can write macros in the external editor, which do certain things based on information in the header, e.g. the receipient of the mail.
