seems like a crash in pixmapcache, which was rewritten for kde 4.5 please test again with that version.

The system appears to be running in the background, but i dont know enough of the keyboard commands to do something eventful other than bring up the system manager.
it is solved in kde 4.5. kde 4.4 is not maintained anymore, if you want to have the bugfix, you need to upgrade to kde 4.5
