Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.3.5) OS: Linux I am experiencing an annoying problem with the current release of Mandriva Linux 2010.0 KDE desktop with precompiled kernel 2.6.31-12-desktop-1mnb, where sometimes the mouse buttons of my generic two button Microsoft serial mouse become disabled, where I can't click on anything in the KDE 4.3 panel, yet the mouse cursor still moves and the right mouse button still works. At the same time, the cut and paste mouse functions seems to get activated and none of the popup titles and descriptions appears. The only way to get out of this situation is to do a [CTRL][ALT][F1] to a text shell and reboot the system. My system consists of an ASUS P4B533 motherboard with an Intel Pentium 4 running at 2.4 GHz, 2 Gigs of DDR Memory, ATI 9200 Graphics Card, Adaptec SCSI Card 29160N. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): x11-server-xorg-1.6.5-1mdv2010.0 and KDE 4.3.5 How reproducible: Keep performing text copy and pastes and other mouse functions. Soon the pick mouse button will stop functioning and the mouse will seem to be stuck in some sort of mode, which can't be exited without bailling out from x11-server-xorg and rebooting the system. Update 10/15/2010: The mouse button problem still exists in Mandriva Linux 2010.1 desktop 2.6.33.7-2 kernel with KDE-4.3.5 and x11-server-xorg-1.7.7-1mdv2010.1, Release Date: 2010-05-04. I have now noticed that the problem seems to be within KDE-4.3.5 after doing several mouse button operations to focus KDE application windows up top on the screen. It's like KDE goes out of sync and the left mouse pick button becomes disabled and the right mouse button then becomes the Minimize and Maximize toggle function of the current application window. The only way I can get out of this mode is to do a [CTRL][ALT][BackSpace] to reset x11 and relog in again. I can't believe other Mandriva Linux 2010.1 users are not experiencing this exact problem with the mouse buttons? Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Position the mouse cursor on some text in some x11 windows kde application and click and drag with the left mouse button to highlight the desired text. 2. While having the mouse cursor positioned on the highlighted text, click the right mouse button to bring up the mouse edit functions menu and left click on copy. 3. Now position the mouse cursor somewhere to paste the selected text and click the right mouse button to bring up the mouse edit functions menu again and left click on Paste. 4. Repeat steps 1. to 4. until mouse buttons seesses to function anymore and that's the bug. Actual Results: Keep performing text copy and pastes and other mouse functions. Soon the pick mouse button will stop functioning and the mouse will seem to be stuck in some sort of mode, which can't be exited without bailling out from x11-server-xorg and rebooting the system. Also, after doing several mouse button operations to focus KDE application windows up top on the screen. Expected Results: On several occurrences, the mouse cursor changed to a thumbnail of the current application being use with a "Not In Use" icon symbol to the upper right of the thumbnail image and it tracks with the mouse movements. During this time the left mouse button will become dysfunctional and the right mouse button will either kill the current application in use, minimize it or do nothing. The mouse should operate normally at all times. No special programs, such as gpm, etc. were installed.
> I can't believe other Mandriva Linux 2010.1 users are not experiencing this exact problem with the mouse buttons? A good way to find that out is to ask/search in forums, instead of in a bug tracker, because if someone here would be aware of such a bug in KDE it would be fixed instantly. I even doubt that the bug is related to KDE at all. A way to find out would be to run a different desktop (e.g. LXDE or Xfce). More help is available at your distributions' forum at http://forum.mandriva.com/
Maybe it's a duplicate of bug 173606?
First, RE: https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=58054 ithink some points were missed which is understandable since the reference to the bug at Mandriva was not listed. David, the reporter, tested other DE and *none* of them exhibit this problem. In addition this problem has tracked through multiple versions of kernels, X and KDE. As far as can be determined, this is a *KDE only* anomaly. It only occurs on KDE desktop since KDE 3.4.0. Since it bridges not only different Linux kernels and X but also recent versions of KDE while still not occurring in other DE, it is most likely code related to KDE that was changed at or near to the KDE-3.4 release. *This is not a standard PS2 or USB connected pointing device.* ( Hence probably why no others have come forth stating that they too experience this. ) It is a serial bus pointing device connected to the serial port. It functions as a mouse pointer and is used because the reporter cannot physically use a regular mouse. The reporter must use this device and is a Linux & KDE confirmed loyalist(fanatic is too strong term but despite suggestions to use another DE, David remains loyal to KDE). My general advice would be to revert to pre KDE-3.4 but as all are aware, it is almost impossible to do that and have a safe & stable system. The next w/b to use a different DE but as mentioned Linux & KDE seems to be the only viable option for the reporter. AFAICT, there is no reason to believe that it is anything other than some kind of interference from a KDE widget. Only KDE dev' will be able to ascertain what|which ... or prove me|us wrong.
Reporter apparently switched 3 for 4 and meant to write KDE 4.3. I compounded the problem & did the same thing. Please consider this issue as ''since KDE 4.3.*'' (not 3.4.0) ... Sorry 'bout that. WCIS? ...it's one of those days.
Does the bug happen with KDE 4.5? Is this indeed a duplicate of bug 173606?
I just saw this in the mail pile ...sorry about delay. dunno why OR did not respond (but will query on MDV Bugzilla). The reporter uses KDE 4.3.* with Mandriva 2010.1 release and did not have 4.5.* available. AFAIK that has not changed. Because it is an accessibility item(serial port mouse-pointer for people with hampered mobility in arms &|R hands) no one at Mandriva has been able to test for it on cooker(development version) which has KDE 4.5.80-*. AFAIK, no one has any real serial port pointers(i.e., usb and ps2 won't do).

The mouse button problem still exists in Mandriva Linux 2010.1 desktop 2.6.33.7-2 kernel with KDE-4.3.5 and x11-server-xorg-1.7.7-1mdv2010.1, Release Date: 2010-05-04. Just any Microsoft two button serial mouse will have the same behavior. I am not using any special accessibility options in KDE-4.3.5. However, when I dow a lot of clicking and cut and paste operations that's when both mouse buttons become disable. Also, just before this happens, the mouse cursor gets a cancel/termination icon attached to the lower right corner of the normal mouse cursor arrow and if I click either of the two mouse buttons, this cancel/termination icon disappears and both mouse buttons stop functioning. Yet the normal mouse cursor is displayed and tracks normally with mouse movements. I am still working on the IBM PS/2 mouse interface adapter for my Rat pointing device. The guy who is helping me do the physical work on it has be busy with a death in his family and being sick with a flu, etc. However, sometime this week he will be back to help me with it again. I haven't tried another windows manager, such as gnome, etc. Maybe I should if it won't screw up the KDE-4.3.5 install? Thank you, David A. Smith
@David: I'd tell you to try any 2011.1 beta live CD's (KDE there would have the fix from bug 173606), but there aren't any out yet.... (FWIW, there's a couple of community/unofficial repos that have KDE4.5.x packages, if you have a spare HD partition, try doing a 2010.1 install and update to KDE4.5.x from one of those repos..).
David: Sorry to hear there is still an issue. Yes, try another desktop environment. It is important to isolate the issue to KDE or, to the contrary, determine that the issue is not just KDE. The LXDE desktop /should/ already be installed. If not, then the IceWM DE S/B installed. One of those is typically installed in the default installation so if either are present, try it. The install(e.g., task-lxde) is quick and uses minimal space if not present. A simple '' urpmi task-lxde '' will work to get LXDE installed. You can also use the GUI installer to select, e.g., task-xfce, task-xfce-minimal, task-gnome or task-gnome-minimal, ...etc. depending on how much space you have for the install. The task-xfce-minimal should be the quickest among those and sufficient to ascertain if the problem is only KDE. In addition, in a week or so, there should be a release of 2010.2(that's the plan ... see http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/2010.2_Development ). It is unclear what diff there will be but it might be prudent|wise to make a clean install of the 2010.2 even if the difference is minimal. Please post results.
Im using an updated trunk revision and my mouse is stopping working for some periods of times (lets say 15 to 30 seconds).
I'm having a similar issue on KDE 4.5 on Kubuntu (deb based). Not sure if it's related as I'm not using Copy and Paste from the context menus. Occasionally, for no reason, the mouse starts acting in a quite bizarre fashion. The pointer will still move, but moving the mouse over anything (e.g. buttons, K Menu, etc.) seems to be non responsive, the items don't highlight, and when clicked, nothing happens. At the same time, the ALT keys seem to stop working too, meaning I can't ALT+Tab between programs. The rest of the keyboard still seems to work. Could be a K-Win issue, I'm not quite sure. If I Ctrl+Alt+F1, I DO get to the console, and from there I can kill and restart KDM and everything works fine again. Figure that one out ;-)
Over a month and no response from OR so I am done. Maybe issue is resolved? I cannot do much to resolve the issue anyway, if it still exists, and cannot track this anymore. I hope it is resolved with new KDE SC 4.6.0 release. Best of luck! Ric

However, I don't care much for gnome and much of the apps that are in KDE are missing in gnome. By the way, how do I upgrade to KDE SC 4.6.0? Can I do it through urpmi -a or do a re-install from the Mandriva Linux 2010.2 distro? Thank you, David A. Smith
