Here is the proof! One of my KDE virtual desktops turned to a gnome one!

Version: 4.5 (using KDE 4.5.1)
OS: Linux

Something weird and pretty unbelievable happened to my KDE environment today.
Because of a bug(?) of the paste widget something happened that actually was very pleasant and fortunate!

Somehow, one of my KDE virtual desktops turned to a Gnome one, showing my gnome wallpaper and all the nautilus services enabled when clicking the right button of mouse.
All the other virtual desktops remained KDE ones and when I click the right button there, I have the KDE services.

For me this is perfect and certainly suitable for many persons that want to combine the KDE services and functionalities with the Gnome services and functionalities.

Since what actually happened in my desktop was pleasant, desirable AND actual,it would not be so difficult to be implemented as a feature.
I suggest to be an option in the wallpaper windows option.
(where you can choose "gnome environment" alongside with the globe or the slideshow etc)
Of course, for this option to be enabled, gnome has to be installed but nevertheless most people have both.

So this could end the silly subject: "KDE VS GNOME".
KDE can run gnome in one of its virtual desktops providing in this desktop all that gnome gives as services and functionalities.

I experienced this and I liked it!

Btw, all this started when I was investigating this bug about the activities that multiply randomly in every reboot:
http://old.nabble.com/-Bug-248386--New: ... 57i40.html

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
Click on the paste widget in the area where you should choose a random password.
Actually I do not dare to reproduce the "problem" or even reboot my computer fearing that I will lose the unexpected results of the process!
Fact is that like in miracles, a gnome desktop is implemented in one of my KDE virtual desktops and I like this so much!

Actual Results:
One of my KDE virtual desktops disappeared and suddenly this virtual desktop became a gnome one!
(I obtained the gnome wallpaper there as well as all the nautilus services and all the files that appear on the gnome desktop.

Expected Results:
Certainly not to have a gnome Desktop inside a KDE virtual Desktop!
This gnome desktop appears in all of my two activities unaltered.

I have the default widget style. The "problem" appeared when I used the paste widget.
Nevertheless, what happened was a blessing.
It is a dream come true.
Gnome inside the KDE.
What else could you ask?
This is a wish that has to be implemented and it will satisfy so many persons.
I live with this new reality(having gnome inside my KDE) and I like it so much!
I have 6 virtual desktops and now one of this is pure Gnome as the others five remain KDE.
My pc, is a cheap acer aspire 6530 running opensourced ati radeon drivers.

This should be possible in both directions, but since I don't actually have GNOME installed I cannot test this. You can try logging out, start a clean GNOME session instead of KDE, and run "plasma-desktop" from a shell. It should give you the Plasma desktop running inside GNOME.

On the reverse, something started the GNOME desktop while you were running the KDE session. This could be, for example, a specific file type that binds itself to the GNOME browser or desktop. You could ask on a GNOME related forum which command starts the desktop (i.e. the GNOME equivalent of KDE's "plasma-desktop" command) and run that command whenever you want to enjoy this "feature" again :)

Reassigning to Plasma developers to check the Paste widget issue. Optionally this could be turned into a feature request for plasma-desktop to "embed" a GNOME desktop somehow, or simply by overriding it (per virtual desktop) as indicated in this bug report.

Christoph!
Thanks for your quick reply!

What is awesome for me is this;
I have six KDE virtual desktops and gnome is running right now only on one of them and not on the others.
Furthermore, I can switch to whatever virtual desktop and there are no problems of stability or whatever despite the fact that one virtual desktop is so different than the other five!

On the virtual desktop that runs gnome, I retain the effects and the functionality of the KDE (aka to tab apps etc) and the things that really change are the behavior of the right click and the prominence of the nautilus file manager.

I enjoy to have a gui that in 5 out 6 virtual desktops have a KDE right click behavior and KDE functionalities and in 1 out of 6 virtual desktops has a gnome right click behavior and gnome functionalities.
This is the combined and diverse functionality that I was dreaming since along time ago!
I don't know if this can be activated providing a certain command in the konsole the way it has been implemented right-now in my computer and surely I will search more about the subject and I will give the feedback.

Certainly, this is a feature that has to be implemented in the KDE environment. A feature that will please a lot of ex-gnomes like me.
I choose KDE because of the myriad of choices that gives me and this could be another choice among others.

Hello!

This feature request was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this feature request is already implemented in Plasma 5, or is no longer applicable.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this feature request. If the requested feature is still desired but not implemented in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!
