Description Oleg Atamanenko 2010-09-20 20:35:20 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.1)
OS: Linux

Currently KDE interrupts shutdown if any KDE-based application crashes during shutdown.
I.e. if any KDE-based application crashes on close when user tries to shutdown then KDE Bug reporting wizard starts and interrupts shutdown process. It is not very comfortable on laptops, because 'as user' I want to switch off laptop (i.e. I just close it, shutdown starts automatically), and it is surprising, that KDE didn't perform shutdown because of some KDE-based app crash. And consequense is that laptop battery drains to zero.

And similar issue with console. When KDE shuts down it can detect if any TTY console is opened and notify user if he/she wants to closes those consoles too. I suggest to add setting to "always close other consoles" in System Settings.

So, it will improve laptop user experience.

Thank you!

Reproducible: Didn't try

by the way, i hope you submit the backtraces of the crashes you get, that way the crashes can be fixed and this bugreport solves itself :)

not sure where to assign this bugreport yet

The application which crashes has bug reportes (actually it is a choqok. See details in #249748)

But the thing I'm talking about is different.

As for laptop user - if I press shutdown, then laptop should shut down. Doesn't matter if any application crashes during shutdown.

Currently KDE Konqi starts and wants me to report the issue. It is not very user-friendly.

Maybe, crash info should be stored somewhere automatically and upon a next login KDE should display me some notification.

But current situation is not satisfying. Because it breaks users' workflow.

What I'm trying to achieve - is to make KDE better and more user-friendly. So, one of the directions of user-friendly improvements is to make users more happy. And sometimes there are some rough corners, that should be polished.

I think this is just one of such cases. I can work with this issue, but it makes me feel unsatisfied (Argh, I want just to shutdown, and KDE is not too smart and doesn't do what I want.)

Anyway, thank you guys for your work; I'm very impressioned by it.

[Comment from a bug triager]
I haven't got time to look on this issue but I think a solution could be available to satisfy both devs and users. Merging with bug 126073. Thanks
