Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.4.4) OS: Linux i open stuff like Yast and it is supposed to ask for Root password. but nothing comes up. after trying a second time i look at the list of windows on the bar, they are there. upon clicking on it, the dialog comes to the foreground. for some reason this window appeared behind a window. this is not uncommon, a heavy user should have experienced it at least once. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: have a bunch of windows open and on the screen. i only use Desktop 1 (not tried multitasking with other desktops - but i generally dont need to because i have monitors!). cause things to come up like the "open with" dialog to come up. Yast Root password request. error messages.
i am using SUSE 11.3
focus stealing preventtion @nothereforever please open a konsole, type "xprop" and point a) yast b) the password dialog attach or post both outputs here (use "xprop > some_file.txt" do redirect the output into a file you can attach here) @christoph do you know how kdesu (?!) is invoked by yast?
Thomas, run "kmenuedit", select any application, Advanced tab > Run as different user, leaving the user name blank means "root".
i know how to run an application as root, thanks ;-) I thought this was about yast in particular, using kdesu for some module. reading the report again, it seems it's actually just for every modal dialog... unfortunately i cannot reproduce that at all, sorry. @nothereforever Maybe it's for some interaction, run "kcmshell4 kwinoptions" and uncheck "click raises active window"

focus stealing prevention? i need it to steal focus! i have to be able to see it to click it. so i move other windows out of the way to do this. this time it came in front (so i guess i need to be using it a while with many windows open). another example is "monitor settings" on the green button, the error (in the past) has appeard behind windows as well (unable to get monitor information). on other occaisions it does appear but it does not have focus - yet the flashing bar is still there, so i type in the password and nothing appears. the attachment is of the window that had focus (not sure if that helps). do you want me to do it again when it does not come up with focus?
since it's not an issue on the yast invocation, there's no need for (further) xprop dumps The problem is likely the focus stealing protection* and some other window receiving input and thus preventing the focus steal -> unraising the kdesu window. *it's transient for some hidden unmapped 1x1 window out of screen geometry, seems to be the default for parentless modal Qt dialogs - therefore it's not forced above anything... =\ try to add a specific window rule and in workarounds "force" "focus stealing prevention" to "none" and/or in "preferences" set "keep above" (checked) to "force" or "apply initially" Be aware that this way the window will immediately be focussed (so if it appears while you're wrinting sth. else and hit enter, this text goes to the kdesu dialog) and (in case you set "keep above" cannot be covered by other windows as long as you don't deactivate "keep above" - what's not possible in the force case)
kdesu supports "--attach <winid>" which makes in transient for random windows what means that it will stay on top of them. This works reliably here, so iff there's still an issue, it would be an issue with yast only. The window manager cannot magically draw connections between clients but relies on hints of the client processes on what belongs to what. If there is still an issue with yast you can "kcmshell4 kwinrules" to setup a new rule for the kdesu window to have "none" focus stealing prevention and maybe to initially "keep above"
