Description schmirrwurst 2010-09-17 14:50:35 UTC
Version: 1.13.5 (using KDE 4.5.1)
OS: Linux

Each time I'm writing a new email, the letters only appears after a small delay, and all the system is pretty slow.
I checked the CPU, and I see that Xorg is taking 50%, when the editor is open, since I've a dual core, I guess it is taking 100% from one core...
When I close kmail editor, then it goes back to 5%...

It is only since I've update kde...

Reproducible: Always

OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.32-25-generic
Compiler: cc

+1

I really think this is a very old kmail bug that was never addressed.
That's really too bad

I have it randomly since old KDE 3.

I happens quite often when I connect another monitor.

Steps:

in emacs, press a key and let it repeat during 10 sec: when you release your finger, it stops.

in kmail editor, press a key and let it repeat during 10 sec: display is much slower and when you release your finger, it goes on typing for 40 sec (no kidding !)

I can confirm this behavior. It can be triggered by opening a huge (>1MB) PDF document with okular (did not check if other kde applications also trigger this).
This bug is very very tedious fr me since I use kmail at work and hae to write a lot of mails and read a lot of PDFs.

Here some sys specs:
Dell Vostro 1500 Laptop
2GB RAM
2.6.36-gentoo-r5 #3 SMP PREEMPT
x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
KDE 4.4.5
KMAIL 1.13.5

Have you tried disabling spell-checking? It has been an issue in the past once in a while for me...
Comment 6 schmirrwurst 2011-02-11 22:26:09 UTC
automatick spell-checking is disabled by me... if it is what you mean ?

I'm using an nvidia graphic card, perhaps it is liked with that ?
Comment 7 schmirrwurst 2011-03-05 14:16:11 UTC
I've tried kmail, with nouveau driver, and nv (free nvidia driver) and I could not reproduce the problem. It seems to be again an issue from that dumb proprietary nvidia glx driver !
Comment 8 Peer Heinlein 2011-05-16 23:02:05 UTC
I have the same problem, running on a Dual-Head Desktop-System, openSuSE 11.4, having a nvidia-driver in my xorg.conf.

How can I help solving the problem?
Comment 9 Pal Körössy 2011-08-01 09:20:33 UTC
Same here on OpenSUSE 11.3 with nvidia-driver.
Comment 10 Andreas Schneider 2011-08-05 09:47:58 UTC
Same here! Gentoo with KDE 4.7.

If kontact / kmail starts operations via IMAP X is getting REALLY slow and takes up to 90% CPU for the whole time the IMAP connection is used...

If I close kontact all problems go away...
Comment 11 Stephan Diestelhorst 2011-08-16 08:27:04 UTC
Same here, spell checking is disabled.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2.

We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
