Description Giacomo 2010-09-15 08:40:38 UTC
Version: 4.5 (using KDE 4.5.1)
OS: Linux

Hi.
Typing text into text areas, for example in kmail or qtcreator, but also in other cases, makes Xorg cpu usage rise from 20 to 70-80%. When I stop typing cpu goes down.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Open kontact/kmail and type text.
Many other text areas of other programs reproduce the problem

Gentoo Linux.
Since kde 4.4 or even before.
Dual monitor, NVidia drivers 256.53, but also previous versions. Twin View.
Xorg 1.9 but also previous versions are affected.

Try
- using antialiased (grayscale) fonts instead of monochrome bitmap fonts
- disabling compositing
- switching to the open source nouveau driver

Could you check if anything of the above makes a difference?

Hi Christoph.
I am currently using Gnome because Kde in my machine is not usable since
version 4.4 more or less. I also had to expand memory since 2GB ram were not
enough to run it.. Since I use my machine at work, as soon as I have some spare
time I will give a try to your suggestions.

What I can say now is that Compositing and desktop effects are disabled.
As to anti aliasing, my option was "System preferences". I do not know where to set monochrome in systemsettings.

As to noveau, I am quite new to it and I do not know whether it is stable and suitable for my NVidia card with 2 monitors. I am currently using NVidia official drivers.

By the way, gnome runs fine...
