Description Vladimir Konkov 2010-09-14 10:41:06 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 1.2)
OS: Linux

Please, implement Firefox-like behavior for opening tabs:
Middle mouse button -- open new tab inactive (already implemented with option)
CTRL+left mouse button -- open new tab and activate them immideatly

PS: thanks for your work, IMHO rekonq is future KDE browser

Reproducible: Always

Hi,

I just saw that there's a review request for this issue report and in the title, I read this : "even when the option "Open tabs in background" is enabled".

I hope this behaviour will be configurable as I'm a laptop user and CTRL+ left mouse button (touchpad in my case) is the way I use most often to open tabs in background.

Now, if the behavior change after this patch and when clicking CTRL+left touchpad button the link I expect to see opened in a background tab will be in an active one even if I selected the "open tabs in background option", then I see this as an issue not as an enhancement because:

1) I don't use an external mouse, so no "true" middle button
2) middle button on touchpad means clicking on left+right together and this is not practical (at least on my laptop) as it is most often executed with the right hand thumb.
3) what is the point of "open tabs in background" option after this patch ?

Thanks.

In the old days of firefox Shift-Click opened a new window, Ctrl+Click would open a tab in the foreground, and Ctrl+Shift+Click opens the tab in the background. I might remember this the wrong way around about the fore/background, but it was possible to swap that anyway. I set rekonq to open tabs in the background, so right now I have no means to open a tab in the foreground.

solojay: if you are running a synaptics touchpad and the pad supports it (the 4 year old pad in my Samsung does), you can use multi-finger taps. I.e. to get a middle-click I tap with two fingers, and tapping with three fingers gives me a right-click. That is configurable through the synaptics configuration, the default setting is the other way around IIRC.

That reminds me that I wanted to open another bug about the following, but it fits here, too:

pressing Shift+Enter on a link should open it in a new window, Ctrl+Enter in a new window and Ctrl+Shift+Enter in a new background tab (and again, the foreground/background thing is the same setting as for Ctrl/Ctrl+Shift with mouse clicks).

I think that this should be implemented. Also, firefox opens an active tab when the link that is clicked is supposed to open in a new window. However if you left-click and choose "open link in a new tab" on that same link, it opens an inactive tab.
I like this handling also, and would like to see it implemented.

I think rekonq 2.0 works exactly as firefox in tabs management, (firefox 17.0 with default options) and very similar to chrome (just one difference I bet you cannot find...).
So, also not having the ctrl+click feature requested (that my firefox no more has since.. a lot!) I guess this has been fixed in the upcoming 2.0.
