Description Vadym Krevs 2010-09-02 21:03:03 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.0)
OS: Linux

OpenSUSE 11.3/x86_64, latest KDE 4.5.1 rpms from openSUSE build service.

I've got a folderview widget set to display the contents of the Desktop folder. I've carefully positioned the icons the way I want and checked both "Lock in Place" and "Align to Grid" settings. No sort options are set. Then I emptied the Wastebin. This for some reason triggered a rearrangement of all icons in the Folderview in some random order.

Reproducible: Always

Expected Results:
Emptying the wastebin should not rearrange icons in the folderview. Adding/removing icons should not automatically rearrange icons in the folder view.

OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.34.2-0.1-desktop
Compiler: gcc

The same happens when an icon in the FolderView is right-clicked and "Move to Wastebin" is selected. The icon is deleted, and all folderview icons get automatically rearranged.

This is so annoying.

I experience this as well. Any change to an existing Folder View desktop icon, whether done via the KDE icon Properties editor or by editing the .desktop file with a text editor will cause every icon on the desktop to be "reflowed" starting in the upper-left-hand corner downward and rightward (the Arrangement mode is set to "Top to Bottom, Left to Right"). The only way I've found to avoid this is to log out, edit the icon with a text editor (which presumes I know how a particular characteristic is encoded, which is only sometimes the case).

Double-plus annoying...

Seems to happen only on 32 bit. Annoying but not deadly :)

Not so, also happens in 64 bit

OpenSUSE 11.3/x86_64, latest KDE 4.5.1 STABLE
same effect on 64 Bit

I can't reproduce this bug with KDE SC 4.6beta2.
Moving files to trash (even from the FolderView itself) and emptying the wastebin don't trigger a rearrange. The icons remained in the same position (align to grid and lock positions both on)

The bug is reported against 4.5. Isn't the behavior of 4.6 a non-sequitur here? Or should I infer from your response that you're not going to fix bugs in 4.5?

Let's say that getting it fixed for KDE SC 4.6 is better than getting no fix at all.. I just tested the bug report in my testbuild using KDE SC 4.6 and I'm adding the information.

I'm not a Plasma developer to know if there was a commit in the FolderView code that must have fixed this bug (in order to backport it to KDE SC 4.5.5) or if it is "pure luck" or just a sidefix (fixed while modifying other code/fixing other issue)

I would also like to get all the bugs fixed in all the releases possible, but that's out of my control :)

I'm going to re-test it against KDE SC 4.5.4 and add my information

Regards

Testing on KDE SC 4.5.4

- Setup a Folderview showing the Desktop folder (first option in the FolderView configuration dialog)
- Arranged the icons in a random way (align to grid)
- Blocked the view (lock icons)

- Empty the wastebin from Dolphin (there were some old files on it):
Icons are still on position

- Created a new text file from the FolderView context menu
- Right clicked the text file and selected Move To Trash
Icons are still on position

- Empty trash from Dolphin
Icons are still on position

- Created a new text file from the FolderView context menu
- Created a Wastebin icon on the Desktop
- Right clicked the text file and selected Move To Trash
- Empty trash from the Wastebin icon inside the FolderView itself
Icons are still on position

... Am I missing some case ? may be trashing several files at once or emptying the wastebin from another place ?

Thanks

I can't reproduce in 4.7.4, Dario couldn't in 4.5.4 and 4.6.... Until further notice, I'm tempted to believe Dario's assessment of a colleterally resolved bug :)
