Description peter_s_d 2010-08-17 06:17:32 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.4.3)
OS: Linux

A long time ago it used to be possible to use the <ctrl><alt><keypad+/-> keys to zoom the entire desktop. The virtual desktop would stay unchanged, but the screen mode would change allowing the user to pan around the virtual desktop. I found this "hardware zoom" a wonderful disability aid. (I have poor eyesight.) I believe that it still works with the closed source nVidia and ATI drivers, but xorg disabled it from the open source drivers because they insist that it could and should be handled (better) by the desktop managers.

<https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14688>

As an interim measure I think that I will buy a new nVidia card so that I can use the closed source driver and get this feature back.

The feature is still documented in "man xorg.conf".

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Hit <ctrl><alt><keypad +>, nothing happens.

Actual Results:
Absolutely nothing (with the open source drivers).

Expected Results:
Panning should be enabled.

Possibly execute a command like; "xrandr --fb <virtual_desktop_size> --output default --mode <next_mode_on_Display_Subsection_Modes_line> --panning <vitual_desktop_size>".

I can confirm that this does still work with the closed source nVidia driver, just not the open source drivers. :-(

Also I have just seen a Windows program that does basically the same thing, plus a few cursor finding enhancements. It costs Aus$600. Some people think that it is a valuable feature.

This is probably what kmag should do in "full screen mode". If you really like the current behavior of kmag's full screen mode then a new entry called "panning on virtual screen" would be a sensible name.

Thank you for your bug report or feature request.

Unfortunately, we did not have a maintainer for the "krandr" components, which are used to manage displays and monitors in the KDE Workspaces.

The "krandr" components has been superseded by "KScreen" in newer releases of the KDE Workspaces. It is compatible with all versions since 4.11, and is also used with Plasma 5. Please check with your distribution how to update to KScreen.

If this issue or feature request is still applicable to KScreen version 1.0.5 or newer, please add a comment. We will then reassign this ticket to KScreen developers.

If you are already using KScreen to manage displays or monitors, and found a different bug or need a specific feature, please create a new ticket for "KScreen" product in this bugzilla using this link: https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=KScreen
