Description James 2010-08-10 13:12:47 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.4.2)
OS: Linux

I've created my OpenVPN connection, and it is connecting fine. I can browse web servers on the remote LAN just fine.

I installed nautilus and I can browse samba shares on the remote LAN just fine.

Works in Nautilus, does not work in Dolphin or Konqueror

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
I go to Network > Samba Shares
I can see the remote workgroup, but clicking on it seems to do absolutely nothing in Dolphin

I tried navigating to the shares in Konqueror. This has the same results as Dolphin: I can get as far as seeing the workgroup, but clicking on the workgroup seems to do absolutely nothing.

Putting smb://ip_of_remote_host/ into dolphin gives
Could not connect to host for smb://smb/ (error doesn't match my request)

doing smb://ip_of_remote_server in konqueror gives
timeout on server ip_of_remote_server (comes up quite quickly)

Actual Results:
Varies - see steps above

Expected Results:
See remote files

One key key difference I'm seeing between nautilus and dolphin/konqueror is that the workgroup is capitalised in nautilus like follows:

Nautilus: WORKGROUP
Dolphin/Konqueror: Workgroup

I did "killall kio_smb" and tried opening the connection again, but still only nautilus is working.

Someone tells me this seems to point towards a bug in the SMB KIO slave...

I've used the SMB kio-slave in Dolphin and Konqueror over an OpenVPN link for some time now (since KDE 4 basically). The only problem I have is the fact that the WINS server is not allowing VPN users to use it.

As a result I always use IPs in the 'smb://hostname' string which allows me to copy files over the OpenVPN using Dolphin.

If using IPs does not help, you probably have some problem in your KDE installation or with the tunnel itself.

On a side note: routing problems can prevent contact to remote hosts, try pinging them first. And Windows (and others ofcourse) can be configured to refuse file sharing with systems outside the local network scope. Check your OpenVPN IP with the remote network setup and make sure you are not being blocked.

There have been a lot of related fixes in the last seven years. Does this still happen with more modern software?
