Sorry for the stupid summary, quite hard to describe what happens here in once sentence :)

When I click the up arrow to show the list of hidden tray icons, it shortly appears and immediately disappears again.  When this happens, an untitled X app appears in the task list with the odd window in the top left corner.  I'll attach a screenshot.

It seems like thistops to happen once I close KMail which is running as a tray icon.  Either because KMail causes it or because the list of hidden icons got too long.  Or something else.
