Version:           2.1b4 (using KDE 4.4.5) 
OS:                Linux

The tab bar is always shown even when there is but a single document open. This is default behavior of most KDE apps, but (i) it would be better if it weren't, and (ii) it should be at least configurable, as it is in e.g. Konqueror.
