Description iberlynx 2010-06-30 20:27:20 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.4.4)
OS: Linux

When I start-up my eeepc with ArchLinux and kdemod stable packages it boots up in less than 10 seconds, I log in and than have to wait for about 40-50 seconds until I can do anything like see the panel and the k-menu button to start an application.

I believe it's because of all the widgets being initialized.

My question is then, can we please prioritize things so that the it starts #1 desktop containment, #2 the panels, 3# the kickoff, #4 the systray, and then #5 whatever else is missing (like restore previously opened software) , so that we not on Quad-cores 64-bit systems with nvidias XXXXX can have some widgets on our desktops without having to wait almost a minute to start the desktop to a usable state, please.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Log in and wait for almost a minute

Actual Results:
you wait for almost a minute before being able to do anything other than scratch your head or distract your friends so they don't have to watch how slow it is and say that windows 7 would be much better :P

Expected Results:
To be able to start-up some application to get productive as soon as possible (not longer than it takes the system to boot-up)

prioritize the loading of diferent plasma components and othe KDE components to give the user the ability to be productive as fast as possible

i would say, restoring the old session is mostly at fault here. but thats just a guess :) i see that too by the way. But since when restoring my old session it starts at least 5 apps, i always thought of that as normal

Well. Because of this slowness, I always shutdown every possible app including system tray ones. So the situation I'm describing is without almost any extra thing loading besides KDE stuff.

The reason I believe plasma is to blame is because I recently needed to use different activities with different plasmoids for each desktop and it got worse, and it really seems that everything is waiting for the plasmoids to load. No huge fan venting - which would indicate hot CPU, not much sdd led blinking, just a lot of waiting :P

this does not represent a fixable issue. the "fix" is to make everything faster. which .. is not something that has a measurable point at which it is fixed. so, yes, we work on performance. that's the most we can do for such a report.
