Since upgrading to KDE4.5 RC1 window thumbnails (present windows, window switcher) are shown as nearly completely white rectangles (see attached screenshots).

This doesn't happen for the Present Desktop Grid effect.

I made sure no X11 components where upgraded when doing the KDE upgrade, so it seems to be definitely a KDE problem.

Also since the upgrade the whole rendering is sluggish - every 0.5s it seems to stop for a moment when rendering animations (desktop transitions, menu fade-in, highlighting the hovered desktop in present desktop grid, ....).
Maybe this is related to the rendering bug.
