Description Baconmon 2010-06-21 11:33:32 UTC
Version: 2.4 (using KDE 4.4.4)
OS: Linux

In the very old gwenview it would sort by file date. But in the newer gwenviews, sorting by date will sort by the EXIF date, and ONLY sort by file date if there is a lack of EXIF data. Sorting by EXIF is neat if you have a directory full of pictures that you took with your own camera, but when you have directories of lots of various pictures and wallpapers saved from across the internet, they are sorted in an essentially random order on gwenview if I sort them by date because the EXIF data on all the pictures are from various months and years.

It would be very helpful if there was a simple option to choose either EXIF sorting, or file date sorting. As it stands right now on gwenview, I have no way of putting my pictures in the order that they were actually created.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Open gwenview and sort by date.

Actual Results:
Randomly sorted.

Expected Results:
Sorted by date that they were actually created.

yes there should be an option to sort by mtime only
Comment 2 Karsten 2011-04-22 16:15:19 UTC
I can confirm this is still an issue in KDE 4.6.2 Gwenview 2.6.0

Have a look at bug 281720 ( https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=281720 ), maybe one could solve both bugs/wishes with one configuration option.

I can confirm the bug with gwenview 4.11.1

At first, my bug report was about "sorty by date give totally random order", but from what i can read upthere, it could perfectly be that a subtle mix of mtime and EXIF time is used.
And if EXIF time is ever considered, then the menu entry "by date" is ambiguous, i've thought for years that mtime would be used then...

This is another example of a Frankenstein feature. Half exif, half mtime. And 4 years?
Comment 6 NMD 2016-04-14 19:24:35 UTC
Hi using kde 4.14.2, Debian Jessie.
I can confirm that this is the case - when set to sort by date, instead gwenview, for me, sorts by most recent viewed date (and therefore the order alters as you look at them).
Cheers.

So that usability issue is pending since 7 years ...

Personally, I have enough repo on github to work on, but it should be easy to add/clarify sorting options.

Yes, as lot of other tickets here, unfortunately.

You are probably feeling better after talking about this situation via Bugzilla, but surely you'll agree this does not solve the actual problem at all.

To give this a positive spin: A lot of Gwenview's bugs are low hanging fruit and ideal to get started with developing for KDE. Just let us know if you are interested in writing a patch, we can certainly help you getting started with the process.

I was just providing a bit of context. This ticket is far from being alone. Don't hold your breath.

"do it yourself" is such a common answer !

The common answer is "send a patch". Note that is said "I'm willing to mentor someone in writing the patch and get it approved, even if this takes me much more time than just implementing it myself", which is different.

Allow me to echo Henrik's sentiments. I've also found a lot of low-hanging fruit and getting started isn't too hard. We would be happy to help you dip your toes in.

Also, on this subject:

"do it yourself" is such a common answer !"

Yup. That's how a volunteer-driven community works! If you want something done, the best way is to do it yourself. We'd be happy to help you get set up to do this, if you're interested.
