Description Ahmad Samir 2010-06-06 11:16:58 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.4.3)
OS: Linux

When "Paste Clipboard Contents" is active in Dolphin, browsing folders becomes a bit sluggish. It's not a long delay but it's noticeable. Clearing the clipboard contents (using klipper), or copying a file makes Dolphin fast again.

I've been experiencing this bug for quite some time (since 4.2.x IIRC) just never really pinned it done to a specific reason except recently.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1- Copy some text, i.e. Ctrl+C
2- Open Dolphin and browse folders
3- Notice that browsing is sluggish, a noticeable delay, not that long though

4- Clear the clipboard contents or copy a file, and notice how browsing becomes normal/faster

Thanks for the report, but I could not reproduce the issue. I did some profiling and checking the clipboard content does not seem to take any considerable time. Maybe I missed a configuration detail... Could you please provide the following information:
- Which view mode do you use? (Icon view, detail view, column view)
- Did you enable previews?
- Does the size of the text have any influence on the performance?
- Does turning off Klipper have any effect?

Thanks for looking into this. I use:
- Icon view
- Previews are not enabled globally; only for certain folders and only for images
- Haven't tested changing the font size, I usually use big fonts (big as in 18pt with a 101dpi monitor; or 15pt with 120dpi)
- No, klipper isn't a factor in this ordeal

I have "remember view properties for each folder" enabled, dunno if it has any effect; I'll try experimenting more with this, if I find something conclusive I'll report back..

Version: KDE 4.5.0 (PCLinuxOS 2010)

Just wanted to note that I am also having the same issue and clearing the clipboard does speed up file browsing. Noted especially after copying large files where they remain in the clipboard even after pasting the file.

-Icon mode
-Previews not enabled except for certain folders
-Using font size 8
-Turning off klipper does not resolve the issue

Coming back to this. The issue is more visible when klipper is running as it's set to "prevent empty clipboard"....

Could the "paste clipboard contents" be optional?

(If not, could you point me to the code hunk that enables this in kdelibs? so that I can patch it out locally, and test dolphin without that for a while).

Can you still reproduce this issue with the newest version of Dolphin?
Comment 6 Ahmad Samir 2018-03-01 20:55:32 UTC
Actually, I haven't used klipper in a long time (definitely more than 4-5 years).
Comment 7 Julian Steinmann 2018-03-02 15:30:56 UTC
As I personally can not see any difference between "Paste Clipboard Contents" being on/off, I'll close this bug.
