Description shinydoofy 2010-05-24 23:08:34 UTC
Version: 2.3.0.90 (using KDE 4.4.3)
OS: Linux

When muting Amarok (Win+M / speaker icon->speaker cross icon) it mutes as expected. However, unmuting does not work: The little red cross next to the speaker correctly disappears, but there's still no sound. Changing the volume (for example by scrolling over the speaker icon) fixes this.

Reproducible: Always

Verified, very likely a good junior job.
Comment 2 Samuel Brack 2010-06-05 10:51:23 UTC
Yeah, I also can confirm this.

I'm thinking this bug is caused by some external library.
I have reproduced successfully the bug on my personal machine (Debian SID) on both the distro's version and the GIT one. When I tried on my parent's machine (also Debian SID, but a bit more updated) the bug wasn't present.

One possible source for the bug is that I have pulseaudio installed on the machine where the bug isn't present.
Comment 4 Issam Mehssani 2010-06-06 12:46:45 UTC
After some more testing it turns out the bug is present only when using the Gstreamer or Xine backends (as oppposed to pulseaudio). There is no specific output on the console when muting/unmuting.
Comment 5 Myriam Schweingruber 2010-06-06 13:44:09 UTC
Reassigning to Phonon. Issam, JFYI: Phonon needs a backend anyway, regardless if you use xine or gstreamer, pulseaudio is just another layer.
Comment 6 Colin Guthrie 2010-06-06 14:14:17 UTC
Just to add to Myriam's comment about pulseaudio: When PA is in use, and phonon is specifically compiled with PA support (PA can be used, albeit far less appropriately, without this support too) it will intercept all volume and mute calls and pass directly to pulseaudio skipping the backend completely.

If on the working machine you issue the command "export PHONON_PULSEAUDIO_DISABLE=1" prior to running the audio-producing application (e.g. amarok) then the integrated PA support will be skipped and the backend will be used as in a non-PA mode. This may be useful for testing.

Regardless of whether PA is or is not used, the backend will remain the same. FWIW, Gstreamer has much nicer PA support than Xine, although has other problems that may make Xine more appropriate. The joy of phonon backends :p

I run lucid and cannot find the system's magic button to push to hear audio from amarok or rhythmbox.

There is no MUTE / UNMUTE applet installed on the toolbar. Gstreamer, pulseaudio, alsa, OGG, xine, and ffmpeg are all installed.

Today, amarok rejected pulseaudio, falling back to "default".

Can anyone give me a little enlightenment as to what is going on?

This problem automatically shows when I try playing amarok.

( My duplicate bug report is 241790. )

Ken, you are mixing up things: the mute/unmute is not an applet, it's when you click on the volume button on the toolbar. Also please address your support questions to the forum: Likely you have some misconfiguration in your sound settings, but that does not belong in a bug report.

Same here, unmutes with Pulseaudio and doesn't unmute without it.
Comment 14 Nikita Churaev 2010-10-22 12:18:33 UTC
My backend is GStreamer.
Comment 15 Harald Sitter 2011-03-02 02:07:31 UTC
What version of the backend and Phonon?
Comment 16 Myriam Schweingruber 2011-04-27 21:17:23 UTC
reassigning to the new bugzilla product for better bug tracing of the various backends. Sorry for the noise.
Comment 17 Torrie Fischer 2011-09-23 12:27:41 UTC
If you can test this against the latest versions of Phonon and Phonon-GStreamer (esp. 4.5.90), please let us know if this bug is still around.
Comment 18 Thomas Tanghus 2011-09-23 15:38:08 UTC
I'm using Phonon-GStreamer 4.5.0 where it works OK now. I don't know if there's a Kubuntu PPA for 4.5.90? I'm about to change rig so I'm not really into setting my current up for compiling dev versions (unless it can be done without too much hassle?).

Oops, this slipped from our attention, Thank you for your feedback.
