Please upgrade to latest TagLib. If the problem persists try to identify the file it crashes on.

Upgraded to TagLib 1.6.3 (the package taglib - 1.6.3-0ubuntu1 from the proposed repository:  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/taglib/+bug/572432).
It still crashes on scanning. It's not a particular file as far as I can tell.

Can you also try Amarok 2.3.1 beta 1 then?

Is that the same ass Amarok-2.3.0.90 (http://download.kde.org/download.php?url=unstable/amarok/2.3.0.90/src/amarok-2.3.0.90.tar.bz2) -- I couldn't get it to compile. 

CMake Error at /usr/share/cmake-2.8/Modules/FindPackageHandleStandardArgs.cmake:70 (MESSAGE):
  Could NOT find Taglib (missing: TAGLIB_INCLUDES TAGLIB_LIBRARIES)

I have libtag 1.6.3-0ubuntu1 installed
I can't install the -dev because it wants 1.6.2
