I think, if you add second check-box, near check-box - "Flat View" for view only "Sub-to-do" without parent to-do it be more useful.
For better example: you click this check-box and if "to-do_one" have sub-to-do, then "to_do_one" hide and sub-to-do view in "Flat View" mod, if "to-do_second" don't have sub-to-do, they do nothing.

It opinion have same my friends and it is not all users. I think, this option you can add in configure.

P.S. sorry, I have not good English, because my default lang is Russian (-:

Better done with a filter.
