Description Unknown 2010-04-30 22:19:14 UTC
Version: 3.9 (using 4.4.2 (KDE 4.4.2), Kubuntu packages)
Compiler: cc
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.32-21-generic

Hi,

Almost nothing fully pleases me. openSUSE 11.1 with KDE 3.5.[whatever] actually pleased me a great deal. KNotes (in openSUSE 11.1 with KDE 3.5.[whatever]) pleased me mightily.

I like this saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" KDE 3.5 was great. KDE 4 is terrible. That is why I switched from openSUSE to Ubuntu. It took me quite a while to get used to Gnome. I vastly prefer KDE 3.5 to Gnome, but I prefer Gnome to KDE 4.

I found that I couldn't enjoy life without KNotes. I tried everything. There's no substitute for KNotes. I was thrilled to discover that I could add KNotes to Ubuntu 9.10. (Unfortunately, Ubuntu's version of KNotes is not quite as good as openSUSE's version of KNotes.) Under Ubuntu 9.10, KNotes worked brilliantly (more or less).

By simply clicking on the KNotes panel icon, I could display a drop-down menu of all my KNotes (I use a lot of notes). Then, simply by clicking on one of the menu items--a name of one of my notes--I could display just the KNote that I wanted to see and use. In other words, I could display any KNote or KNotes that I wanted to display. I could display one KNote or two KNotes or three KNotes, etc.

Today--Friday, April 30, 2010--I upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I've discovered that KNotes under Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (which is brand new) has a serious problem: I can no longer display the KNote or KNotes of my choice. The new KNotes drop-down menu only allows me to "Show All Notes"; the new KNotes drop-down menu does not provide me with a list of names of my KNotes. Every time that I want to use only one of my KNotes, I have to display all of them (at once). It's extremely annoying and time-wasting. I end up having to close all the KNotes except the one or ones that I actually want to use. (Currently, I have 13 KNotes.) (Maybe that's the problem!)

I'm miserable enough when KNotes works perfectly. Please fix it!!

Bye-bye,

Mark

Note: I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I am not using Kubuntu.

It's very unfortunate that somebody at KDE decided to replace the best desktop environment--KDE 3.5--with a vastly inferior desktop environment (which will remain nameless). I wasn't a Gnome kind of guy; I am now. The best thing that KDE could do is to bring KDE 3.5 back and then take great care of it. When you make the best, you stick with it if you have any sense!!!!!!!

Maybe the genius who thought that it was a GREAT idea to get rid of KDE 3.5 got his or her hands onto KNotes. The whole point of notes is that you can look at just the note or notes that you want to look at. Thus, there's absolutely NO POINT in allowing the end user (note maker) to ONLY open ALL the notes or NONE of the notes!!!!!!!!!! KNotes (as with KDE 3.5) was well nigh PERFECT to begin with. Now, sad to write, KNotes is going to crap, too. Doesn't ANYBODY have any SENSE anymore?!!!!!

I can confirm that this is happening with xfce4 as well.
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit.
There is no dropdown with a left mouse click as in previous versions.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your comment!!

With the 32-bit version of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Gnome), a left mouse click on the KNotes panel icon does display a drop-down menu. Unfortunately, the menu does not have a list of the titles of the various KNotes. (There was never such a problem with openSUSE'sKNotes.) Thus, with the new KNotes left-click drop-down menu (32-bit Ubuntu 10.04 LTS; Gnome), I can't open only the KNote or KNotes that I want to open; I have to open all my KNotes at once ("Show All Notes") or open none of my KNotes! It's all or nothing!!

Mark

I'm seeing the same behavior on an OpenSuSE 11.3 RC1 system running
KNotes
Version 3.9
Using KDE Development Platform 4.4.90 (KDE 4.4.90 (KDE 4.5 RC1)) "release 2"
Comment 6 Suberu 2010-07-15 12:00:26 UTC
Same behaviour of knotes (can only display all at once) in opensuse 11.3 rcs.
But this started once updated to kde 4.5 betas from 4.4.
Comment 7 grepper 2012-01-01 18:55:43 UTC
I am seeing this behavior on debian sid
Qt: 4.7.3
KDE Development Platform: 4.6.5 (4.6.5)
KNotes: 3.9

If I create a new user or move ~/.kde directory to a new name, the annoying behavior goes away. But I am not about to rename my .kde directory and lose all my settings etc, so this is a show stopper for me. I have tried just renaming individual config or app directories that seemed appropriate, like knotesrc, ~/.kde/share/apps/knotes/, ~/.kde/share/apps/kontact/ , but to no avail.

Update:
Strangely, days with this problem, I noticed kded4 was not running after a notice when trying to configure something in "System Settings". Starting it solved the issue. Why kded4 seems to stop running from time to time I am not sure.
Comment 9 Myriam Schweingruber 2012-09-06 21:51:00 UTC
Is this still valid with KDE 4.8.5 or later?
Comment 10 Myriam Schweingruber 2013-02-14 11:25:23 UTC
Closing for lack of feedback, not reproducible with KDE 4.10
Comment 11 Suberu 2013-02-17 12:30:00 UTC
For me it was fixed for a minimum year of using latest versions of KDE.
