(Using dialogs to deliver messages to the user is bad UI design, but that is not the bug here) The visible one was just the "tip of the day" box. It could not be closed, because a modal box with an error message was beneath it. (No hostname specified.) Yes, I understand I need to set up kmail before it will work. It should not obscure the error message with the "tip of the day" box though. Better show only one box at a time. For example, drop the silly "tip of the day" if there is an error already... The workaround is simple - move the "tip box" to one side, revealing the other box in order to dismiss it. Guessing that there is another box on the screen is not easy thoughj, it was not obvious.
Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report. KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2. We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
