What does the output of "akonadictl status" say?
It should be "Akonadi Server Search Support: available (backend: Virtuoso)".

konadi Control: running
Akonadi Server: running
Akonadi Server Search Support: not available
Comment 3 Thomas McGuire 2010-04-07 13:11:11 UTC
> Akonadi Server Search Support: not available

That is probably a packaging problem, write a bug report at the Gentoo bugtracker.

Gentoo is known to ship broken packages unfortunately.
Comment 4 BRULE Herman 2010-04-07 13:13:59 UTC
I have lot of use flags disabled, en Akonadi disabled in control pannel too because I not wish of it.
Comment 5 Thomas McGuire 2010-04-07 13:31:58 UTC
> I have lot of use flags disabled, en Akonadi disabled in control pannel too

Akonadi is the foundation of Kontact, it is where your PIM data (currently address only) are stored, you can not disable it.
Akonadi uses Nepomuk for searching for contacts, you can not disable it either. You can disable Strigi indexing though.

Gentoo should not allow to have Akonadi/Nepomuk disabled with USE flags, it is required for KDEPIM.
Comment 6 Maciej Mrozowski 2010-04-07 16:39:21 UTC
I'm Gentoo developer and one of those preparing KDE packages there.
Thomas, I suggest you stop spreading nonsense about things you clearly have no clue about (which is Gentoo packages dependency tree and state of Gentoo packages).

Below is dependency section for kmail in Gentoo packages:

DEPEND="
	$(add_kdebase_dep kdelibs 'semantic-desktop')
	$(add_kdebase_dep kdepimlibs 'akonadi')
	$(add_kdebase_dep libkdepim)
	$(add_kdebase_dep libkleo)
	$(add_kdebase_dep libkpgp)
	ayatana? ( >=dev-libs/libindicate-qt-0.2.1 )
"
RDEPEND="${DEPEND}
	$(add_kdebase_dep kdepim-runtime)

kdepim-runtime is akonadi (kdepim)
kdepimlibs[akonadi] means it requires akonadi support in kdepimlibs
kdelbns[semantic-deskop] is requiring Nepomuk libs in kdelibs

Also
"Akonadi Server Search Support: not available" means that search support is not available in Akonadi, which means that either
- it's been overriden and disabled at build time (which is not the case here, and we talked about it already)
or
- it's been disabled at runtime (in System settings - which is the case here - and we talked about it already as well)

Please reopen. I know it's always the easiest to shuffle real problems under the carpet and do everything (like blaming direct downstream/upstream) but fixing them.
I prefer not to return "X is known to do Y" remarks...

Sorry, I apologize for that. I thought it must be an upstream modification, especially since USE flags were mentioned, and I couldn't reproduce it here.

I'll mark as duplicate of bug 219687. The freezes can actually be caused by multiple things, most of that should be fixed in 4.4.1 already though, so I thought this case must have been something else.

Comment 8 BRULE Herman 2010-04-07 19:41:46 UTC
It's not duplicate of bug 219687 because I'm in KDE SC 4.4.2 !
Comment 9 BRULE Herman 2010-04-07 19:45:32 UTC
And Akonadi can be disabled at the run time, but in nothing case kmail need freeze, it need prevent all error, and inform the user if real problem is detected.
Comment 10 Anssi Hannula 2010-04-13 07:32:04 UTC
I'm experiencing the same issue (on Mandriva Cooker, KDE SC 4.4.2). Akonadi is unable to start due to another issue (Launchpad #554660, haven't investigated further yet), and I receive no graphical error message of any kind. Kmail hangs when pressing the Send button.
Comment 11 Björn Ruberg 2010-04-14 22:56:26 UTC
Sorry. Just because bug #219687 has been reported before KDE 4.4.2 it can be very well a duplicate. As long there is no other evidence that it is something different I think we should believe Thomas's judgement.
