The laptop computer was idle on battery.  The battery level reached a 25% capacity warning and auto switched to a greater power saving profile.  The crash occured at that moment.  The crash can be duplicated by manually switching power management profiles. ("powersave" to "aggressive powersave" that turns off desktop effects with "powerdevil")
