Version: (using KDE 4.3.2) OS: Linux Installed from: Ubuntu Packages It would be nice to be able to configure the task manager in a way that the order of the application tabs is ALWAYS preserved. I was expecting this behaviour to happen by checking the following options in the Task Manager Settings: - Grouping: "By Program Name" - Sorting: "Do Not Sort" Instead, the tabs keep moving as new instances of an already opened application are launched. It seems that the behaviour is the following: when a new instance of an application is launched, the tab grouping that application moves to the right-most position. I would like to have an option that allows always keeping the task/group tab in the same position it was when I first opened the application. I think there are 2 advantages for this behaviour: - This is the way Microsoft Windows behaves and former Windows users (like myself) may appreciate it. - This behaviour allows me to save time because I always open the applications I commonly use in the same order so that I don't have to search for the application I want to switch to (using the mouse) because my hand remembers its position in the taskbar... I really find this helpful. NOTE: I have asked about this issue in http://kubuntuforums.net under section Desktop Support -> KDE Support, Subject "Application tab order in taskbar" and I received the following comment from a Kubuntu Veteran: "Of course some people might prefer moving group to the last when a new instance of a program is started, so perhaps this should be configurable. Still, it should definitely be consistent...the task/group should either always move to the last or always stay where it is, not like it currently is." Thanks!
Even if grouping is not enabled, it would be nice to have a task manager option like: "Always create new tab next to similar." This option would open a new dolphin tab next to an existing dolphin tab, a Thunderbird compose e-mail tab next to the Thunderbird main application tab. This would also be a part of the solution for the issue when grouping is enabled.
I was expecting this behaviour to happen by checking the following options in the Task Manager Settings: - Grouping: "By Program Name" - Sorting: "Do Not Sort" I'm also expecting for these options The grouping is also very useful with applications like gimp that are distributed in more than one window. Another possibility is grouping by process ID: For example all windows owned by the process xyz are grouped in a single icon in the task manager.
Plasma 5.7 ships a fully-rewritten Task Manager backend which should resolve these issues. Please re-test with the Plasma 5.7 final release and feel free to reopen if problems do persist after all.
