Version: (using KDE 4.4.1) Compiler: gcc-Version 4.3.4 (Gentoo 4.3.4 p1.1, pie-10.1.5) OS: Linux Installed from: Gentoo Packages I can't change the network management backend for solid in the kcm_solid module because the apply buttons stays grey even if i select e.g. the wicd backend instead of the networkmanager 0.7 backend. I have also tried 3 live-cds with different kde 4 version to check if the problem is not related to my system. Following live-cds where used: - KDE-Four-Live.i686-4.4.1.iso from http://home.kde.org/~kdelive/KDE-Four-Live.i686-4.4.1.iso - KDE4-UNSTABLE-Live.i686-4.3.85-Build1.27.iso (the kde4 version is kde 4.4.68 (KDE 4.5 >= 20100318)) from http://widehat.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Medias/images/iso/KDE4-UNSTABLE-Live.i686-4.3.85-Build1.27.iso - openSUSE-11.1-KDE4-Reloaded-LiveCD.i686-4.3.1-Build4.1.iso from http://ftp.halifax.rwth-aachen.de/opensuse/repositories/KDE:/Medias/images/iso/openSUSE-11.1-KDE4-Reloaded-LiveCD.i686-4.3.1-Build4.1.iso On all three live-cds the problem is the same. Changing the to be used network manager backend in the kcm_solid module doesn't enable the apply button.
The list is not used to select which backend you use, but in which order they are used. To use a different network management backend, click on it, and move it up to the first position using the arrow buttons next to the list. Then the "Apply" button will be available. This should be mentioned in the Help page, so I am changing the description.
ah ok. I have overlooked the arrow buttons next to the list. If you see the configuration view for the first time, it isn't obvious that you can only change the priority of the existing solid backends. At least the "What is that" tooltip of a backend list says that you can change the order of preference.
The text in the Handbook in master (will be in 4.7.1) reads now: This System Settings module allows you to change the order of the backends used by Solid to retrieve information about your hardware, and manage its network connection, bluetooth and infrared devices if present. None of these backends can be used directly by the user. To use e.g. a different network management backend, select it, and move it up to the first position using the arrow buttons next to the list. Then the Apply button will be available. @ Stephan: Any improvements/additions to this text? Is it enough and sufficent Info to close this as fixed?
I have no additions to provide. For me thats enough and sufficient. So this bug can be closed.
