This is a problem insofar as also other notifications of new messages don't seem to work anymore (see bugs <a href="https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=228527">228527 </a> and <a href="https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=197768">197768</a> for the broken animation of the systray icon). Thus, if I enable the message queue because I don't want to have a chat window popping up as soon as I get a new message (and at the same disable the popup notification message because since kde4 this eats up too much system ressources) there is no notification about new messages anymore. Which isn't a very desirable behaviour. My QT-gui (4.5.3-r2) is built with mng support as suggested <a href="http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-816513-highlight-kopete+icon.html">here</a>.

In KDE SC 4.6.0 the icon is not animated but it changes to a "closed letter" icon upon message arrival. If you think that is acceptable you can close this bug.
as soon as a new stable KDE is available I'll check. by now on gentoo, it's still 4.4.5.
in KDE 10.1, kopete 1.4.1, there is still no notification within the contact list. to open an incoming chat, I have to click on the dock icon that notifies me of a new message. (the animation of the docking area icon works again, but this has been another bug)

With currently kopete 18.04.3 on gentoo, this can is sort of solved: animation of systray icon working again and new message in contact list marked by envelope symbol. The animation had been more obvious, but there's no reason to consider this a bug anymore. Sorry for not reporting on this for a long time, but I had stopped using kopete for a while due to several problems. Thanks for keeping up the great work on KDE.
