Version: (using KDE 4.4.1) OS: Linux Installed from: Archlinux Packages I like the Kickoff menu, but one thing that is bothersome is that the icons in the application menu aren't alphabetized and I have to do that manually. For example, say I install Firefox. On the Kickoff application menu, it will be added to the very top, above Akregator. In order to fix this, I have to right click the K icon and click "Menu Editor" and manually move it to where it's supposed to go. I think it would be awesome if there was an option to alphabetize the applications list by either the application name or category (depending on which you chose as the default sort).
+1 to this idea.
This works here, by default applications are ordered by their description, if you go to the kickoff settings and check "show applications by name" they will be ordered by their name (e.g. "amarok, dragon player, kaffeine").
I'm glad it's working for you, but that doesn't mean that this is fixed. I just installed Quassel today, and it was added to the menu between Choqok and Firefox. That's hardly in ABC order. To fix it I had to open kmenuedit and manually order them.

Did you try to check "show applications by name", like I mentioned the default is that apps are ordered by description in your case: Browser (Firefox) IRC Client (Quassel) Twitter Client (Choqok) So as you see this is perfectly alphabetically, please try the checkbox and see if it works for you :)
That's the first thing I do whenever I install KDE, and I've been using that option ever since whatever version first introduced it.

Not necessarily. My report was wishing for an option to alphabetize the menu. For example, rightclick the menu and click "alphabetize" or have a setting to make it happen automatically. I didn't feel that this was a bug because the option is titled "show applications by name" not "alphabetize applications by name". Therefore, this is not a bug, but a feature KDE just doesn't have yet.

Like I said, here everything is displayed in alphabetical order, whether I set it to "show applications by name" or not, it is always ordered alphabetically. I believe you agree that a default behavior like this (sort stuff alphabetically) is a good idea and since it works for me like that, I have to expect that the misbehavior you experience is a bug. Could you maybe make a screenshot of your "unordered" apps (for example just install rekonq and show where kickoff puts it).

this seems ordered ok on simpleapplet
Actually you're right, I can reproduce this, I guess I did only look in the favorites tab back then.
yes this issue still remains but i think that the severity of the bug should be a "wish" and not a "normal"
yes it's a feature request. Whether alphabetic ordering is something useful for an application launcher, I personally are not sure about.
Well, considering that all other environments I know of (Windows, Mac OSX, XFCE and GNOME) already alphabetize applications menus and always have, I would think this would have already been done. Everyone I have ever met that uses a computer looks for applications in alphabetical order, so it would definitely be useful. At least as an option, but I'm pulling for this by default.
This is still an issue in 4.8. Whenever I install an application it is put at the top of the list in that category. This causes me to manually alphabetize my applications list each time I install something.
STILL an issue in KDE 4.8.5 kickoff menu editor 0.8 I know people who have run screaming back to windows because they can not do this simple task. I am not among them, but it is certainly annoying enough that I continued searching for third party solutions or manual work-around, etc.
I agree this is still an issue, it's till an issue in 4.9. The main point for this bug was that when you install new applications, KDE adds the new application to the top in its category. At the very least, we should be able to reorganize apps by name, but KDE should be smart enough to put the applications in the right order, like ALL the other environments and competing platforms do. It's easy to reproduce. Every time I install a new program, it's on the top of the list. For example, if I install "Xine," it will show up in the applications menu, under Multimedia, but at the very top. Every time I install a program, I have to open kmenuedit and manually sort it to it's rightful place.
Hello! This feature request was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this feature request is already implemented in Plasma 5, or is no longer applicable. Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this feature request. If the requested feature is still desired but not implemented in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging Thanks for your understanding!
