Description H.H. 2010-03-10 21:43:40 UTC
Version:           1.4 (using 4.4.1 (KDE 4.4.1) "release 225", KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop / openSUSE_11.2)
Compiler:          gcc
OS:                Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop

I mostly use detail-view in dolphin. sometimes I like to view photos in some folders in preview-mode. So I always have to click two buttons:
- from detail mode to icon mode
- toggle preview mode
and the same back ( 4 clicks) . Would be nice, if there could be one button-action for both, which I could place on my toolbar and/or a shortkey.

There is an opportunity for greatness here. This wish could be implemented by introducing a feature of configurable buttons that have menu actions added to them by the user. Clicking on the button runs the action of the menu items in order listed by the user's configuration, much in the same fashion as a macro, but using menu items instead of commands. For example, this request could be accommodated by the user configuring a button to include the menu items:

View-> View Mode-> Icons
View-> Preview

in the list of actions to be performed when the button is clicked. The user could give this button a context-appropriate name and even allocate an appropriate icon (or design a custom one).

Think of the power and flexibility that this feature would enable.

People forget that a File Manager should be a file manager and not anything else. You can't bloat all features in, it has to be kept clean. I saw other people asking for video and image editing in Dolphin directly, documents "fast editing". For this there are separate applications: Gwenview for images, etc...
Anyway, I think that Dolphin can actually achieve that already. It has "Services", go to Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services. You might find what you need there, if not, find someone who can implement it for you :)

With Dolphin 17.04.2, the preview is also shown when in detail mode. -> fixed

Is is possible to preview the thumbnails in detail mode now, and this is an important step in the right direction (thanks for this!). Many of my use-cases, especially when using the filechooser in some applications are covered by this.

But I still have to do both switches, to switch between detail-mode without preview (which is much faster) with the smallest possible icon size, and the thumbnails in icon mode. Use case: I prefer listing files in details mode without preview with smallest possible icon size (with that preview only slows down, and you can't see anything in that size). But to have a quick impression from the images in the folder, I want to switch to preview-icon mode, because this mode is the best option for that.

Since previews are on by default in Dolphin 17.12, the single-button mode switcher now does what you want!
