Description Mathias Homann 2010-03-08 08:27:20 UTC
Version: unknown (using 4.4.1 (KDE 4.4.1) "release 225", KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop / openSUSE_11.2)
Compiler: gcc
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.31.12-0.1-pae

Every time I login I have to rearrange all my desktop icons, since they arrange themselves in several columns down the left edge of my screen.

"Sort icons" is switched off, "Folders first" is switched off, icon positions are set to "arrange on grid" and "locked",
my desktop is on the activity "folder view" only...

Where do i switch that icon rearranging off?
Comment 1 Aaron J. Seigo 2010-03-09 03:17:13 UTC
if you arrange the icons, then from a konsole window do `kquitapp plasma-desktop` and when that is complete `plasma-desktop` do the icons show up re-arranged? if so, does a crash window show up?
Comment 2 Mathias Homann 2010-03-09 09:10:10 UTC
no, there is no crashlogger showing up, and the icons don't rearrange themselves, when I do this.
Comment 3 Mathias Homann 2010-03-09 14:08:39 UTC
After this got changed to "widget-folderview" i checked my plasma-desktop-appletsrec and found that it had at least 5 separate containers that have "folderview" as their widgets... cleaned the file with a text editor, leaving only the containment entry with the highest number and folderview, and relogged... and the icons stayed where they were.

... now for the cold shower: checked the other PC that shows the same symptoms, and that one has only one containment entry with folderview as the widget :/
Comment 4 Aaron J. Seigo 2010-03-09 17:02:58 UTC
are you using per-virtual-desktop activities? perhaps you could attach the plasma-desktoprc and plasma-desktops-appletsrc files to this report, even.

I'm not using per-desktop activities...

WAG: when logging in, the scree resolution is smaller than it was on logout. then something (xrandr?) changes the resolution to be higher but the damage is already done: folderview has re-arranged the icons so they fit on the screen.

this would explain why it happens on log-in but not when kquitapp'ing plasma-desktop during a session.

it could also be that the first painting of the folderview containment is happening at a small size before plasma resizes it to match the screen resolution, resulting in the same effect. though that should be consistent between log-in startup and kquitapp'ing.

the config files you attached look fine, btw.

still, it's a "WAG".
Comment 9 Mathias Homann 2010-03-09 19:27:42 UTC
my display is set to run at only one resolution (1680x1050, native resolution of my tft screen) all the way from kdm to desktop... including bootsplash and such.
Comment 10 Mathias Homann 2010-05-07 18:17:01 UTC
after upgrading to kde 4.4.3 this bug is back with a vengeance.
and what is a "WAG"?
Comment 11 Mathias Homann 2010-05-09 10:53:31 UTC
this _MIGHT_ be a duplicate of 227157,but it differs from that in the fact that it doesn't happen EVERY time, and it is not fixed, obviously.

here's another interesting tidbit:
i have 4 machines running KDE 4.4.3 on openSUSE 11.2, and the four machines are identical as to the versions of installed packages... and it happens only on ONE of them, and always the same one.
Comment 12 Beat Wolf 2010-06-03 09:30:46 UTC
Same here, but it's not on every login.
The icons are unsorted, aligned to the grid. Sometimes when login in, they are sorted alphabetically. This is with kde 4.4.2
Comment 13 Mathias Homann 2010-06-03 10:22:35 UTC
Still happens, running kde 4.4.3.
I've been keeping track, sort of, and it happened at roughly 60% of the logins, with no order or anything.
Comment 14 Roman Fietze 2010-08-06 08:17:02 UTC
Here two different procedures how I can reproduce that 100%:

1)

Copy a .desktop file to the Desktop folder, e.g. by using an existing one and
copy it to a new file. The new icon with the same text as the old one is
located somewhere at an unused location, but the remaining icons do not move.

Edit the new desktop file using Emacs. When the file is saved, Emacs creates a
file with a '~' at the end and saves the new version. The order of file
creation (e.g. via temp file) and file renaming probably depends on how Emacs
is configured. In this moment all icon positions on the desktop are reset and
all icons are located at the left edge of the desktop.

Removing the '~'-file does not change anything again, the icons stay at their
(now wrong) place.

2)

Log in via NX from an other computer having a different display size. Hereby I currently only tested login in to the same account that still has a session running on the own display. But this worked before, with KDE4 and KDE3 of course.

Tested using kdebase4-workspace-4.4.93svn1149349-478.1.x86_64 and kdebase4-workspace-4.4.95-476.1.x86_64 from openSUSE repos.
Comment 15 Mathias Homann 2010-08-12 16:50:24 UTC
This has gotten worse under KDE 4.5.
Now, every time something changes something in my ~/Desktop folder, the icons re-sort themselves.
Since I usually keep a few files that I'm working on right on my desktop, saving one of them screws with my icons EVERY TIME.

Confirmed with 4.5.0 on openSUSE. This was fixed on 4.4.4, but now it is broken again on 4.5.0. Can we please mark this bug as confirmed?
Comment 17 MK 2010-09-15 15:12:43 UTC
Same problem here on Kubuntu 10.04.1 LTS on KDE 4.5.1
