It occupies only one half of taskbar's width, the 'wrong' texture every time is the same one (black with Air theme's squares). Removing whole cache in ~/.kde/cache-* fixes the situation but it's just till the next login to KDE. This happens right from the start of KDE and is quite stable (i.e. no flickering or replacements etc.)

another variation of the "black panel" bug; i'm not seeing it anymore in trunk, though. marco: do you know of anything that changed related to this recently?

I don't know but it looks so similar in terms of result of the bug. Still here in 4.4.2 and really annoying...
yes, it's the same thing. it seems a problem with overlays and i didn't see it in trunk since ages several overlay caching issues were fixed in trunk, so it's very likely this is fixed. hrder to test now since the panel doesn't have an overlay image anymore *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 224666 ***
