Since Kopete supports so many protocols - thinking about facebook here - it can come up to hundreds of contacts very easily.

I'd love to have a more effective way to browse trough contacts:

I'd suggest a grid mode contact list.
Only avatars would be shown, one aside the others. Any other information (Contact NAME, protocol icons, message status, etc.) would be provided via tooltip on mouseover.

A good mockup ?

Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained.

Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
