Description lillymon 2010-02-23 05:52:49 UTC
Version: 2.2.2 (using KDE 4.3.4)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages

I'm using the GStreamer backend for Phonon (Xine has different problems on my system) and it mostly works fine with Amarok (my music application of choice) but certain FLAC files simply won't play with it. I've found that all of them seem to be anime music soundtracks released by the group losslessONE. FLAC tracks from other groups and FLAC files that I created myself don't exhibit this problem, and losslessONE don't seem to have any idea what they do differently that would cause this.

When I attempt to play FLAC files that exhibit the problem, Amarok is able to find lyrics and Wikipedia information, but no track length appears and the file simply will not play. I don't know if other applications have the same problem, but can test if requested.

This appears to be a problem with the Phonon backend in particular as Exaile is able to play these files on my system despite also using GStreamer to play the files. However I prefer Amarok, so it would be nice to be able to play all of my music using it.

Reassigning to Phonon. I don't know if this is not already fixed in the newer version, though.
As for Amarok, we recommend to use the Xine backend, it gives overall better results than the Gstreamer one.

Well I already mentioned that I have a problem with the Xine backend as well, specifically that it cuts off the last three seconds of any track when stopping after it. Some discussion in #amarok led to me believe this was a known problem. I started a bug for the GStreamer problem first because this one seems the more promising to fix.

I also forgot to mention that my Phonon versions are:

libphonon4/experimental uptodate 4:4.6.0-1
phonon-backend-gstreamer/testing uptodate 4:4.3.1-5

I installed the experimental version purely in the hopes that either my Xine or GStreamer problem would go away with the latest version, but they didn't. So I don't know what version is the 'new' one, but the versions I've got there are the newest Debian have available.

That does not sound like a problem in Phonon. Could you mail me a testing file please? But generally this sounds more like a problem in gstreamer itself.

reassigning to the new bugzilla product for better bug tracing of the various backends. Sorry for the noise.

Closing for lack of feedback, feel free to reopen this report if you can
reproduce this with a newer version of the gstreamer backend and provide the
necessary information.
