Description Ben Bucksch 2010-02-20 01:58:58 UTC
Version: 1.0 (using KDE 4.3.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

Name:
Problem: I find a taskbar applet that I like, and want to communicate with others on IRC about it. I don't know how to call it, because the name is translated into my language (German) and I don't know the proper name. I can't tell English speakers "Does Musiktitel-Anzeige support XMMS2?".

Translating back into English is not possible, because it's a name, a) because the expression might be completely different in English, e.g. "Now playing" widget, and b) if it doesn't match exactly, it's not searchable and c) there are sometimes widgets with overlapping purposes, and I want to talk about a specific one, e.g. System monitor (the generic one which makes a graph) vs. that systam load display which displays a bar.

Esp. with the last one, I was totally unable to communicate to others which widget I mean (esp. given that it was lacking in KDE4.1, as far as I know).

---

Webpage:
Without name, I am also unable to find any webpage for the widget. This is important:
1) find it, if I don't know of its existance yet and search for a thing which does what I need
2) evaluate it with screenshots, if I don't have it installed yet
3) if I have it installed and use it, to see all the features and how to use it best.
4) see future plans and contact developers, if I'm interested in extending it.

For example, in the case of the "music title display" widget, I wanted it to control xmms2, but it didn't work. Turns out I just had to install and run some obscure python script for xmms2->dbus->mpris connection, and magically it worked. I learned this by asking on the chatrooms, but I had no way to find out what MPRIS is, that this widget supports it, where to find the XMMS2 connector etc..

So, please:
1. set a unique name for each widget/applet.
Use the source code directory name they live in, or whatever.
2. Display that unique name, untranslated
   - in the "add widget to taskbar" dialog and
   - somewhere in the widget itself (e.g. the About dialog, which must be accessible from the widget's context menu).
3. Add a webpage URL for each widget. "www.kde.org" or "plasma.kde.org" does NOT do, it needs to be for *that* widget. A Wiki page is OK for a start.
4. Create that webpage for each widget.
   It should contain
   - a description of the purpose and features
   - a basic usage description
   - instructions how to solve common problems, e.g. how to hook up the music display widget with xmms2.

Hello!

This feature request was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this feature request is already implemented in Plasma 5, or is no longer applicable.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this feature request. If the requested feature is still desired but not implemented in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!
