What I was doing when the application crashed:
Custom Name files set to Winter 2010 or something like that. Selected all images on card (there was one .AVI movie). I selected all images and clicked button Download Selected. When asked to browse to folder I created a new sub-folder and clicked OK. 
All open Digikam dialogs just disappeared immediately after that.
