I started experiencing the same problem just today on Sabayon Linux (kde 4.4.1 - kopete 1.0.0). Until yesterday's upgrade kopete was working fine but today it started to crash systematically because of a segmentation fault (Sig 11) when I attempt to log onto MSN. I launched it from the terminal with the command kopete --nofork as I read somewhere and fwiw this is the terminal output

kopete(10517)/kio (KDirListerCache) KDirListerCache::slotResult: finished listing KUrl("file:///home/heu-full/.kde4/share/apps/kopete/styles")
kopete(10517)/libkopete Kopete::OnlineStatusManager::cacheLookupByObject: Missed  "Offline/wlm_protocol/#000000//16/a"  in icon cache!

KCrash: Application 'kopete' crashing...
sock_file=/home/heu-full/.kde4/socket-heusab/kdeinit4__0

[1]+  Stopped                 kopete --nofork

then the KDE application crash dialog box pops up indicating a segmentation fault.

It doesn't crash when I log onto my yahoo messenger account though.

I still have the issue on 4.4.1 aswell…

Very annoying, I have to use two programs now :(
Comment 3 Hugh Urwin 2010-03-13 00:53:20 UTC
Well, with me after some hours of logged on the yahoo messenger account
and without rebooting or upgrading or anything it just went back to normal
and let me log onto msn without a glitch. I am on kubuntu right now and it
just behaved as it is supposed to but then kubuntu gets a lot more
(timewise) spaced upgrades (if it had anything to do with the crashing at
all). Maybe it just crashes when msn servers are down?
Comment 4 Hannes H 2010-03-13 15:35:43 UTC
No, MSN works fine with KMess, so its not the MSN-Servers. Other apps work fine, so I don't think its OpenSSL.

Thanks you for your help!

Dear Bug Submitter,

This bug has been stagnant for a long time. Could you help us out and re-test if the bug is valid in the latest version? I am setting the status to NEEDSINFO pending your response, please change the Status back to REPORTED when you respond.

Thank you for helping us make KDE software even better for everyone!

Since there is no MSN anymore and I haven't used Kopete in years, this can be closed from my POV.
