Description BORGULYA Gábor 2010-02-08 00:53:45 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

How to reproduce:
1. prepare a folder with lots of huge image files (I have 520 Gimp xcf files, about 14M each)
2. open the folder with gwenview
3. thumbnails appear slowly one by one, memory gets filled, then swap gets filled
4. openoffice, firefox and finally gwenview are killed by the OS.

Expected behaviour:
Gwenview should prepare the thumbnails using a minimal memory footprint.

The microprocessor usage could be optimised, too. Currently I need to "nice gwenview" otherviwe my system barely responds during thumbnail generation.

Is this still an issue with gwenview 4.10.0 (or newer)?

I ran into this issue recently and looked for existing bugs before filing a new one. This is now occuring both with gwenview 16.08.2 in Fedora 24 as well as gwenview 4.13.1 in Ubuntu 14.04.5.

As soon as I open my phone camera's photo directory(with some 4400 images), gwenview's memory usage starts to grow to the point that the system gets choked and eventually the OOM killer kicks in.

It appears as if browsing a directory loads all thumbnails into RAM regardless of the number of entries within that directory... for now I worked around this limitation by moving the images into smaller subdirectories.

Is there anything else I could provide to help at narrowing down the issue?
