Description Supreme1012 2010-02-07 03:09:36 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.4.0)
Installed from: openSUSE RPMs

Proposed Menu Changes! Please Help me decide if Digikam should use the term 'Folder' or 'Album'. Currently I'm using the term "Folder" since it best describes what is being displayed. I welcome any comments on changes. Lines with "-" in front of them are part of a submenu, and lines in brackets "[ ]" can be toggled. "-LINE-" designates a line inserted between items. Not all "-LINE-" have been inserted yet so please dont comment if you see one missing somewhere.

Album, not Folder

I was debating between folder and album, but I agree that it should be Album. This is because the Album view shows not only folders, but groups of images by date, location, and tags. I've also made a few other changes to the menu, but instead of continuously reposting the entire menu after every little change I'll edit my KDE Interface and Design forum post to show revisions as they're made.

I vote for albums and not folders. Even that they are same thing in techinical way, we use it different way in photographin. And albums is the place to store photos.

This is now how I can see it as you wrote
(needed to write it how it looks when you open the menu first time without sub-menus):

"Scan for New Images (Does same thing as 'Refresh' in Folder Menu)"

But does refresh in album menu update the album or just the collection or all collections?
Because now the Refresh only refresh the current album and not all the collections like the Scan new Images. We have two different functions what to use.

"OpenGL Image View (Practically same thing as slideshow)"

Yes practically but other needs 3D enabled to be a fast. Other does not and is without effects.

I have now being thinkin this and I see that Import and Export menus should be kept alone as own menus. It is easier to use and it allows simpler text in them.
If we would call menu like "Export to" and "Import from", we could drop off the repeated "to" and "from" text from menu.

And we can not bring the "file" menu because it is better if we do not manage files but just photos. We can this way drop away from the file-oriented UI and stay on task-oriented UI. = We do not transfer files but we transfer photos.

I am not sure about the idea to include "Email photos" to export menu because it is more sending than exporting.
And the Album menu looks for me it overlaps someway the View and Image (what I think should be as "Photo"/"Selection") and few other menus.

Example now KDE is planning to move many entries from Settings to View, like toolbars and menubar options.

The digiKam Album GUI menu have been already fixed in the past.

The changes proposed in this files have been followed a little bit. Other one do not respect GUI ergonmy and KDE GUI style.

I close this file now...
